That would mean he's disabled mobile data, as accessing the play store requires an internet connection.

1320368 2012-12-28 00:52:00 How it works:

Phones have the ability to access the internet via "3G" over the cellphone network. Like calling and texting using data over 3G costs money. By default (EG if you have no plan) "casual data rates" apply. These rates are $10 for the 1st 10Mb and $1 per Mb over that 10mb allocation per day.

When in range of a wireless network the phone will switch from packet data (3G) to the wireless network to save battery and data costs. This is done automatically, also when you leave a wireless networks range (eg leave home) the 3G will come back on.

What is probably happening, since you have no wireless at the moment is the phone is accessing the Internet via 3G, the one without a data plan (texts only) will have quickly used his 10mb and then lost all his credit because he was charged for using packet data. The solution is to disable packet data/mobile data/2G/3G (different phones have different names) so that the Internet cannot be inadvertently accessed. Even if you don't deliberately use any Internet services by opening the web browser, the phone still refreshes things like weather or syncs gmail and other things. Also games and apps might try to display ads as well. By disabling the packet data/3G you not only save on inadvertent Internet use but you also save battery since 3G is quite a drainer.

I'm a little confused by the situation however, from what I gather you Have Telecom's $19 prepay plan, everything working fine there. You also have another kid on the $19 prepay plan, also working fine? or has this too run out of credit? Then there's the 2d phone which has used all it's credit (solution outlined above)

I Think that's right.

Anyway, all the best with your phones. It can take a little getting used to by they will work flawlessly once you get used to them and sort the credit thingy out!

1320369 2012-12-28 00:56:00 In a nutshell, they were "going nuts" with their 3G data use.

Installing an app from the Play Store? That'll use data.
Updating an app? That'll use data.
Checking G+ / Facebook? That'll use data.
Browsing forums? That'll use data. ..

500MB can be a lot, if you're using WiFi for downloading Apps and things. Because you don't have WiFi, they're just going to have to be careful.

Depending on the version of Android, you can go Settings --> Data Usage, and it'll tell you the app that's using your data, as well as allowing you to set monthly limits that it'll cut the 3G data off after it reaches.

And to clarify we have 3 prepay phs. 2 with 2dgs $19 txt plan. One of those is not android. ( mine ) and 1 android on telecom $19 txt plan. I am the only one wth credit lol an there top up date is next week. Sadly they wil have to earn more pocket money to top up again lol. :) beetle (243)
1320372 2012-12-28 01:11:00 You can disable it my bro's Android you have the pull down menu for it ... not the latest Android.

To me it's a lifestyle thing, I disable 3G and enable only when I need it then I disable it after. If you want fluetness with 3G consider a plan but you still need to monitor your usage. Without Wifi I would never use it attached to a computer though. I would still be careful about software updates cos the sizes are heavy too...

Yep .. disabling 3G is only for mobile data, telephone calls and text / PXT are separate which will continue to work. But you still of course need a credit before you can make calls or send TXT (unless you are using those off the $19 packs).

If you disable mobile data, you will still be able to text and call as usual. Only the internet will be stopped.

1320375 2012-12-28 06:53:00 For my Samsung Galaxy even after disabling packet/internet data it would turn itself on sometimes, from a "push" type email from my website subscriptions. The solution I found from a android article was to create a false APN, and set it to that, from the default [internet.telecom.co.nz] This defintely disabled internet connectivity. kahawai chaser (3545)
