1319813 2012-12-22 20:24:00 A district court judge is waging a crusade from the bench to stop serious offenders being released back into the community.

At one sitting earlier this month, Judge Russell Callander sent four defendants back into the cells while making strong statements about the need to keep the public safe.

During the hearings at the Auckland District Court, Callander said bail was granted too readily and judges could not take any more chances.

“We are almost weekly now presented with ugly situations in court where violent offenders seek and obtain bail, only to return home to inflict either death or further grievous injury on the original complainant,” Callander said.

“That strikes fear into the heart of any rational community, and indeed into the heart of any rational judge assessing risk issues on bail.”

Callander is usually based in Tauranga but has been filling in at Auckland.

Can we keep him in Auckland please.

1319815 2012-12-22 21:35:00 Give that guy a medal.

Finally a judge fit to judge, rather than just bending to suit the needs of financial / housing constraints.

I'd happily commit more taxes towards prisons if it means we can keep the scum off the streets for longer (and make a prison sentence a greater (ie longer) deterrent in the first place).

I cant follow the innocent until proven guilty scheme of things its too risky. If there is risk of flight, any previous conviction that required a court appearance or the crime involved violence no bail should be given.
There is nothing wrong with guilty until proven innocent.

1319817 2012-12-22 21:58:00 And take away all videos, and computer games etc from jails.

That is the one thing that prisoners like to have access to.

Deny that to them and they may not want to go to jail!

I heard that this is having an effect in the USA.

Give them Bambi and the Sound of Music, and Cliff Richard, Opera and Country Music on closed circuit tv
They will soon want to get and out and wont want to go back.

Barry Manilow would do it as well.

I think we have laws forbidding torture, or else I would go along with the above sentiments :)
