167395 2003-08-13 06:33:00 I just recieved a phone call from a guy that I know, and he has recently (yesterday) started having major problems with his computer. He has Windows XP Home edition, and sometimes when he goes online, after a minute, he gets this message that says something about win32, and shutting down the computer in a minute and to save you work.
and when the timer gets to 0, the computer restarts. Norton Antivirus doesn't detect anything, but it wouldn't if a virus had gotten into it, would it? Could anybody help? This is urgent, apparently.
Thanks.

167396 2003-08-13 06:38:00 this has been a major topic across many forums for a while, there are other posts about it that tell u how to fix this problem by downloading the patch. vk_dre (195)
167397 2003-08-13 06:41:00 This is a well known worm doing the rounds - check out some of the other posts here on the same topic

Removal tool (securityresponse.symantec.com) and addition information on the required MS patch as well.

167399 2003-08-13 06:42:00 Sounds like the dreaded Worm that has been the talk of radio today. Even the morning host of Talkback ZB has got it. Seems to like attacking XP

Symantec seems to be the place to go to find out how to get rid of it.

Almost glad I'm still running with Windows 98SE

167401 2003-08-13 06:58:00 Don't forget my thread! (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) :D

Furthermore, I'd like to point out that the best place for updates and patches is the official vendor, in this case Microsoft.

167403 2003-08-13 07:41:00 Darnit you guys are just fueling the madness! I must have counted at least 10 separate threads on the exact same problem in the last day or so.

Make one thread sticky by getting a mod to do it, or bumping it up. Use that thread only. And if anyone starts making a new thread, tell them once to look at the topics on the same page for their solution. :)
