167387 2003-08-13 06:14:00 hi some one help me, I have gone to the sims help on line and they still haven't emailed me (4weeks later).

I have the sims, I regularly borrow the expansion packs from my video store. Now when ever I go to play the game it comes up with a message that is is trying to install something, and after about 5 mins of trying to install something it fails, and shuts itself down. I tried to uninstall it, but the same thing as above happens when you try to uninstall it (either through the short cut on the start menu, or through control panel).

so what do I do, delete the files, and through hack through the registry?

please help?
many thanks
Mike

167388 2003-08-13 17:06:00 What OS are you using? Do a search for the sims in your registry and get rid of the entries (Make sure you delete the right ones though) also search for Maxis as well as sims.

If you are using the sims on 2000 or XP then please note that the game is NOT designed to work on these versions (although I play the sims fine with 2000, haven't tried it with XP yet) They do work sometimes but problems can arise as the game isn't meant for 2K or XP

167389 2003-08-14 03:24:00 thanks for the help,
I am running win 2k
I was hoping not to have to hack the registry, but it looks like that is the only option
anyone else got any suggestions?

167390 2003-08-14 04:19:00 I assume you have the latest service pack4 installed as I was unable to even install the sims until SP2 came out. Just a thought. Odin (227)
167391 2003-08-14 14:23:00 I have sims installed on my XP desktop (for my significant other...you understand...)

It does have a slight flaw, where it sometimes just exits for no reason.
Kinda annoying...but it has only happened twice.

Running XP Pro with no SP's installed.

167392 2003-08-15 07:17:00 For me the reason the sims would exit like that was because it was trying to play mp3 files I had loaded into the Radior and stereo folders, have you done the same by any chance if so then take out the MP3's and put them in one at a time to find out which one is crashing the game.

As for the game being just for your significant other ;-) I believe you :D

167393 2003-08-15 07:20:00 Oh forgot to mention the game can exit like that if you have also installed 3rd party object, skins and floor/wall textures. Download SimCop from the sims website and it will weed out those files that aren't correctly created, worked for me. Odin (227)
167394 2003-08-21 11:00:00 you could try booting from the "last know good configuration" in startup if you press F8 when windows says you can. that might fix the problem, but i cant think of anything else (thats safe), other than the fact that hired CDs get lots of scratches but that probably wouldnt be the problem - but i do know that there is an issue with XP and the sims, as you probably all know. the sims works fine on my XP home computer, but as peoples configurations are all different, then sometimes it works on XP, sometimes not. as odin said, the sims was not designed for XP, but usually works on it anyway. you could try reinstalling windows - if you are really desperate. (ive done it 5 times so far for various reasons, including deleted boot.ini files....but i wont tell you about that one.... agent_24 (4330)
