167334 2003-08-13 02:08:00 Yesterday I was using my laptop when it suddenly turned off. Since then whenever windows starts to load it comes up with this message:

Invalid VxD dynamic link call to device number 3, service B. Your windows configuration is invalid. Run the windows setup program again to correct this problem.

I cant find the windows setup program in dos, and the letters W and S suddenly seem to have also stopped working. I tried to run windows in safe mode but it said there was an error with HIMEM.SYS and that it could not be found.

If anyone could help I would be very happy.

I can't help, but languishing down the post order won't help either so a quick bump brings up your visibility.

All I'd be suggesting would be scandisk to see if your HDD is corrupted or a reinstall of W95, both of which are probably well off target. Mind you, a laptop with W95 would be fairly old so your HDD could be a bit flaky.

Then there are viruses. :(

Cheers

167336 2003-08-13 06:38:00 This indicates your system.ini file is blank, damaged or missing.

Look at this link (support.microsoft.com) for Microsoft instructions on how to proceed.

As suggested above, there could be another underlying reason, such as a dodgy Hard Disk for the failure as well.

167337 2003-08-14 04:03:00 The sudden stop is suspicious. It might be a hardware problem.

Try booting a DOS floppy (or a W95 install disk ... or anything bootable. :d) If you can run an operating system, and acces the hard disk you have a chance (of a reinstall, probably).

167338 2003-08-14 12:29:00 I tried using a win95 boot disk but it seemed to ignore it. I can boot it strait to a dos command prompt from the hard drive but I cant get into the windows system folder because the letters w and s on the keyboard have also stopped working. Swaziman (3694)
167339 2003-08-15 01:39:00 To boot from a floppy you might have to change the boot settings in the BIOS. The "missing" keys don't look good. Graham L (2)
167340 2003-08-15 04:31:00 Do you have a second keyboard you could try?

I’m not sure but I think the keyboard controller is loaded early on and may upset things if it doesn’t load properly or is faulty.

Just a wild stab in the dark. :8}
