167635 2003-08-14 05:02:00 I recently bought a new motherboard (Soltek 75MRN-L) and CPU (AMD Athlon XP2600+).. Nice enough, aye.

Seeing as hardware isn't my high point (too much/so far/yet) - I was wondering what I basically need to be able to use the machine?

I have the CPU and heatsink on the motherboard, and the motherboard in the case, sorted out the power/usb/hdd/fdd connections and stuff, just scared to turn it on.. Cos I don't have any RAM in it yet (looking at some cheap 512Mb PC2700 DDR333 next week) what would happen if I turned it on?

Or should I just wait..?

167636 2003-08-14 05:09:00 It won't do ant harm 'cause it won't go until you put some ram in it.
The power supply & CPU fans will spin up & you will get a bunch of beeps which are telling you there is a problem. NO ram.

Which reminds me.. I gotta unplug the PC speaker.

If you do that how will you know if your PC is trying to tell you that it has a problem?

167639 2003-08-14 05:55:00 True..

Reckon I could hook up an LED or something?

167640 2003-08-15 01:39:00 It is possible to hook up a light instead of the PC Speaker.. Ive seen it done but its a ton of hassle to be honest!

What a PC "Needs":

PSU
Motherboard
CPU
RAM
Graphics Card

and a medium to run an OS off.. Even just a CD-Rom drive can run Knoppix fine if you're looking at 512MB RAM! No HDD/FDD needed ;-)

167641 2003-08-15 08:22:00 chilling it shouldn't be hard to replace the speaker with a light, just get a light with the same wattage roofus (483)
167642 2003-08-15 09:28:00 LEDs require current limited (20 mA) DC
Speakers do not like DC.

Stick to accounting roofus?

167643 2003-08-15 09:36:00 Actually it is usually the little inbuilt PC speaker that gives you the beeps not the regular full blown speakers. mikebartnz (21)
167644 2003-08-15 10:29:00 Also the beeps at post can be a help in diagnosing problems with your system not booting properly.
Check out you BIOS manufacturers site for a list of the beep codes & what they stand for.
Different beep code for each potential problem, I'd leave the speaker active if I were you.
