| 167497 | 2003-08-13 10:55:00 | is it possible to do windows updates for a computer that will not or cannot shut down? as i am now using the work computer, and was hoping to do some updates and that worm thing (i did last night) but can not tell if these are added properly as cannot shut it down to do the restart, it s showing in the add / remove progs file as a hotfix but dont know size or date details etc..... even though i know i did it last night. also was hoping to add some other updates but the windows prog thing says about 26 of one and 25 of other so how many days is that? LOL this is all on dialup remember or is it not worth it? as if and when my beloved comes back ill be on that one again. have had a few hiccups today trying to install progs without shutting down the puter such as avg, and hopefully it will work ok.... any other ideas? beetle |

| 167498 | 2003-08-13 11:23:00 | I don't think you can guarantee the sucess of any update (including AV) without a restart. I understand why you can't restart easily (Callista) but is there not a restart procedure for such things? Many aspects of the updates are not actually installed fully until a reboot, as the programs are in use and cannot be updated live. |

| 167499 | 2003-08-13 11:27:00 | Windows does really need to have the computer restarted when it tells you to do it otherwise the updates are not "properly" loaded. | 167500 | 2003-08-13 23:44:00 | ok will try to do another shut down.... tried it last night and then someone came in so puter is now in use.... and cant be shut, yet . am downloading somw more updates and will do them all at same time hopefully and had done the pact for worm, so hopefully safe at moment and my firewall is working. i havealso got avg and have not unticked at moment unsafe attachment box.... as most of my emails are letters or work stuff. will let you know how i get on and if it works ok.... i had started to do the manual shut down and got as far as programs shutting then could not find the correct list to do a restart so it was panic stations for a little while, and then some one came in so had to reopen and install it all with out the restart, was so frustrating, and also worrying as to howlong will this stuff / info stay on remind me later? and hope no other grebblies get me either. thanxs all beetle |

| 167501 | 2003-08-15 08:17:00 | ok did the shut down but when look at add remove they hotfix and sp2 are not showing up size's and any other details except the number of which it is (hotfix etc) does this mean it didnt work ? as can not remember from other computer whether it show all those details..... and if it didnt work does that mean im not safe again? microsoft works shows up ok and i downloaded that at same time and its got size on it? please tell me some good news? beetle |
