167692 2003-08-14 07:03:00 Lately i've been having some problems with WinME and resources, basically i keep running out of them. I have done a complete reinstall and it doesn't help, which basically means that the progs i use are resources hogs.

Now back in the day when the 16/32 Bit kernal was king programmers use to design progs so they weren't resource hungry so that you could run other apps, but these days with programmers writting code for the more recent 32bit Kernal of XP it seems they no longer care about resources, as XP doesn't have a limit on 16bit resources, The result for us "old skool" users is that we run out of resources faster causing crashes.

Would you people agree with me?

167693 2003-08-14 07:10:00 they dont care bout it coz they think everyones got the latest pc out.

167694 2003-08-21 00:20:00 what sort of PC are you running may need more ram or HDD space etc try only installing what you really need to use on a daily basis kiwibeat (304)

167696 2003-08-21 00:37:00 Nice link kiwibeat, if you actually read it you will see what i'm talking about, WinMe runs in a 2bit pointer system meaning resources are maxed at 65k no matter how much RAM you have, with WinXP i believe 4bit addresses are used resulting in consideraly more than 65k.

What i'm saying is now that developers write for XP, they don't mind having progs loading stuff into the resources (such as extra windwows) because winXp has a 4bit addresses, as opposed to us old skool users with only 2bit addresses.

Do ya see where i'm coming from?

Actually its 2 bytes (16 bit) if you want to be pedantic.

I suspect this problem will get worse, as programs are coded for an OS where this is not a constraint.

My work-around when using ME was to reboot whenever I had a coffee. Good excuse for a coffee as well as giving a highly stable PC.

167698 2003-08-21 03:30:00 yes i was thinking it was 2byte just before as 2bits permutated didn't equal 65k.

I'm thinking i might have to make the move to WinXp just for this reason, its so frustrating having the computer crash after 45 mins

167699 2003-08-21 03:46:00 Oh WinME can't manage memory properly at all. Its absolutely terrible at it, possibly as bad as Win95. You really need something like FreeMem to free it up every once in a while. Plus a 4x reboot each day will keep things going longer - lol. PoWa (203)
167700 2003-08-21 03:49:00 Try 98SE its far better than ME, kiwibeat (304)
167701 2003-08-21 03:50:00 I use cacheman as well for memory management kiwibeat (304)
