167477 2003-08-13 09:24:00 Hi Team

Nothing like a new worm to light fires under procrastinators. :(

I allowed my NAV 2001 subscription to expire as I was about to load a new copy of NAV 2003 that came with Systemworks. I updated my image files etc but hadn't got round to uninstalling NAV yet so when the latest Worm burst on the scene I thought "No sweat" I'll just do a manual download to tide me over, like lots of other PF1 NAV users.

I didn't know the site so I searched the PF1 archive. That didn't help so i Googled it and came up with This Symantec Site (www.symantec.com) which had a self-installing update.

Unfortunately, when I tried to install it, a message came up telling me my subscription had expired. Either I have the wrong site, or NAV have toughened up on free updates.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the free manual update please, or do i have to get my A into G and get the new program loaded.

Cheers

You don't have to worry about that worm as I don't believe you are using XP

167480 2003-08-13 09:59:00 No I'm not really at risk, I run W98 & W2K behind a NAT Router and ZoneAlarm firewall, but my conscience hurts.

Do I take it that there are no free downloads for manually updating NAV Jim, or were you gently extracting the urine. :D

167482 2003-08-13 10:26:00 Hi Billy

2k, is vulnerable as is 2003 server and on the MS site they wern't telling re 98 "unsupported", at least where I looked anyway could take a bet and say 98 is 9x as per ME which is ok or better safe than sorry ;) Nat will help to hide you but won't stop a backdoor dropped by a virus, afaik.

167483 2003-08-13 14:39:00 Actually when the worm trys to connect to Billy's NAT router on port xxx, it won't go anywhere, won't even get a response (stealth). Billy's inside IP address is safely hidden from the worm, hence the worm can't connect with the machine and exploit the windows vulnerability.

Unless the NAT router was actually running Windows (lol) then it doesn't really have a hope of getting near the machine, unless he actually saves the worm to his computer via an attachment or something.

I'd still like to update my virus defs pro-tem, but I'll work on getting the old NAV uninstalled and the new NAV loaded.

Cheers

167485 2003-08-13 22:04:00 It's the outward bound traffic thats of concern with worms/trojans, little sneakys opening things they should'nt.
