167930 2003-08-15 00:35:00 Howdy All,

Am wishing to upgrade with some more RAM ,
I'm wanting one of you bright sparks to tell me what RAM i need to buy..

I always thought that I had to get DDR PC2100 RAM as thats what i thought it had to take, I was told today that I can get 333 RAM and it will still be compatible?

System Info:

Motherboard ECS K7VTA3 v3
Running Win XP , AMD Athlon XP 2400+ currently have 512MB RAM.

The 2 current 256 sticks I have there are PC2100 , must I get 2100? or doesnt it matter as long as its DDR?

Any help appreciated

Thanks!!

167931 2003-08-15 00:55:00 Have you checked what configurations you can use in your motherboard manual? If you don't have one, go to the manufacturers site and check what they have to say for your board. autosporty (2746)
167932 2003-08-15 01:39:00 You should be able to use any speed of DDR RAM - the faster RAM sticks will just step down to the lowest speed memory in the system (eg. if you have DDR 333 and DDR 266 in the same system the DDR 333 will drop down to 266). wintertide (1306)
167933 2003-08-15 05:43:00 The board you have uses the KT333 chipset, this means it will be able to runs CPU's with a FSB up to 333mhz. Your current CPU (Athlon 2400+) has an FSB of 266(2x133).

Now comes the tricky part, deciding what RAM to buy. You only need to buy PC2100 as the CPU wont be able to use anything faster thus buying PC2700 is a waste of money. But if you intend to upgrade soonish(within 6months) it maybe worth buying faster RAM. All new processors are currently being released with an FSB of 400mhz, so if u plan to upgrade at a later date it may be a good idea to buy some PC3200 so can fully utilize your future CPU. Like what wintertide said if you buy the faster RAM it will still work in your system it will just run at a slower speed.

Once again i'll just remind you that anything above PC2100 isnt required for your system adn maybe a waste of money.
