167861 2003-08-15 12:08:00 if plasma tv's have poor resolutions then why do people buy them? vk_dre (195)
167862 2003-08-15 12:13:00 hmmmm .

Available resolutions on plasma screens . . . .

Non-HDTV resolution: (480p signals)

853 x 480 typically found on non-HDTV 40", 42", 43" & 46" plasma screens

HDTV plasma screen resolution:(720p and 1080i signals)

1024 X 852 found on 32" plasma screens
1024 x 1024 found on 42" & 43" plasma screens
1024 X 768 found on 42" & 43" plasma screens
1365 X 765 found on 50", 61", & 63" plasma screens
1365 X 768 found on 50", 61", & 63" plasma screens

All plasma screens are considered HDTV compatible or HDTV ready in that will all convert the signal somewhat and display it . Most manufacturers including Panasonic and NEC offer two versions of their 42" screens, one with the standard 853 x 480 resolution and the other with a 1024 x 768 or 1024 x 1024 HDTV resolution .

You would have to ask the people that buy them.
I could guess:

They are the only flat panel technology readily available in large screen format.
They are an expensive status symbol

Common resolution is as low as 853x480 for a 42" screen.
Whereas your monitor mas a dot pitch of about 0.25mm, the 42" plasma will have a dot pitch equivalent of about 1.25mm, or about one fifth of the resolution of the monitor.

On TV signals at a distance, its not that noticeable but up close it is. They are not really suited for PC monitors at that resolution as you can imagine. Its barely better than CGA

Lifetime isn't too bad, about 2 - 3 years continuous use before the brightness falls to half. You need to guard against continuous display of static images which cause "burn-in".

167864 2003-08-15 12:34:00 So wot should i buy for a tV, i want 42inch
but i dont want the really massive chunky tv's. No projection tv's either. I wanted something sleek and small, so wot can i get now?

167865 2003-08-15 13:04:00 The only affordable flat panel is the Plasma. Thats why people buy them?.

Other options include a projector system, but resolution and brightness are a limitation with them as well.

Oh, dont forget that some Plasma panels don't include the TV tuner, they are just the display itself. For me, they just are not a clean image. Too fuzzy. But I don't want one, so thats OK.

There is a ton of info on the web on the various technologies, just make Google your friend.

167866 2003-08-15 14:02:00 If they were sharp and cheap would you want one? Thomas (1820)
167867 2003-08-15 15:17:00 At the moment the only point in going to a plasma TV is because of space issues and being able to hang it on a wall. Unless you're just wanting to brag that is. -=JM=- (16)
167868 2003-08-16 08:36:00 If they were sharp and clear i would buy them, and i would buy them even to brag :D well i just want a really good tv with optimum viewing, no small screens only big windows. vk_dre (195)
167869 2003-08-16 08:54:00 Man if your looking to pay big money for a tv, pay for a decent projector, and screen thing. PCW mag has a few reviews on them these days PoWa (203)
