168133 2003-08-16 04:29:00 Is there a maximum no. of USB 2.0 ports that the Asus A7N8X can support. Coz it comes with 4 and expansion card has 2 more but i also have another 2 on the case. So could somebody tell me if the mboard can support up to 8 USB 2.0 slots? Chao is back (634)
168134 2003-08-16 04:48:00 I don't think the motherboard would have a limit on number of sockets ... it's the "Universal Serial Bus and the devices are recognised through software ... but you might start to run out of the power it supplies through pins 1 and 4. I would look at installing a powered hub if you have that many devices. (I have seen suggestions that some devices are struggling with the 100 mA limit)

(Bandwidth might start to be a problem, too... it's only got 480 Mbps available. :D)

168135 2003-08-16 06:05:00 Is it an expansion "card" or just a plug you plug into your motherboard and fit into a spare slot (not actually using a PCI slot)? If it's one you plug into pins on the motherboard it'll be those pins that you have to plug the case's ports in to.

I hope that makes more sense than I think it does LOL

168136 2003-08-16 06:59:00 I understand the chipset on the mobo supports 6 USB ports - four of which are on the back panel. The other two are available on a header on the mobo - to which you can attach the front sockets on your case (if you have a suitable cable), or to an expansion bracket that fits in one of the slots on the rear. wuppo (41)
168137 2003-08-16 08:45:00 So you're saying the mboard can support maximum of 6 usb ports.
4 on pack panel. and i would have to choose the two on the case or the expansion card?

168138 2003-08-16 09:13:00 My motherboard has six USB ports available and I also have a USB2 PCI card with three more ports available.

All are fitted and can be used.

2 ports on the board at the back. 2 ports at the back with cable from pins on the motherboard. 2 ports at the front by cable from pins on motherboard. Finally the PCI card with three for a total of nine USB ports.

Usually the motherboard pins need an optional cable which is not always supplied.

168139 2003-08-16 09:17:00 On my mboard it says this:
1x USB 2.0 controller - I assume this is the one with pins so am i right in also assuming that i can attach only one of the following to the controller:
either my USB 2.0 ports from case or the USB 2.0 ports from expansion card.

note expansion card is not a pci card and needs to be cabled onto motherboard.

168140 2003-08-16 09:27:00 Looks that way.

You can attach the cable you have in your case to the pins OR the other cable you have with a header on the back of the case.

I hope it's clear now.

:-)
