2003-08-19 22:01:00 | Hi all, I have now assembled my new PC with Windows XP Pro & I wish to make an image of my C:\ Partition, Either onto a spare HDD Via a removable caddy or onto a Cd/DVD so I can reinstall windows without having to go through all the drama when it becomes munted. I have setup C:\ as NTFS. Would I be better off if the C:\ patition was FAT32 ? What program would be suitable to perform this task? I have Ghost 2002,But unsure if it is up to the task? Thanks in advance Cheers Steve

2003-08-19 22:45:00 | My primary HDD is 60gb total & I have it partitioned C:\ 10Gb ntfs & D:\ is the remainder also ntfs My second Hdd is 120 gb & partitioned into 4 drives,fat32 Starting from scratch EG: Changing partition size or file system is not a problem as I haven't installed many programs or reactivated windows yet. I thought about creating an image last night after installing sp1 & having my computer start playing up,EG: some programs slowed right down & some ended up giving the message "this program is not responding". I uninstalled sp1 & they seem to run fine. I know there is no viirus involved as this PC has not been connected to the net yet & programs used have been virus checked. Cheers Steve

Thanks Babe I will do the updates once I get this drive image sorted out. It seems that only ghost 2003 will create an image to an NTFS partition. So the choice is to use fat32 & ghost 2002 or upgrade to Ghost 2003. Cheers Steve |

2003-08-19 23:38:00 | I have tried/used Ghost & drive image, but still prefer Nero HD Backup. Only caveat, it does not compress the image, and does not allow partial restore. In my case, the C partition is 2.38gb, and this fits on 4 Cd's. I have restored a few times with no problems at all - recently after fitting a second HD and formatting C by mistake!! It is a lot easier to use than the others - my opinion anyway. Bye

2003-08-20 00:07:00 | I have been Ghosting XP since it first came out. Keep your active primary partition as small as possible, about 3.5gb Use 32fat as NTFS wastes a lot of space, and 32fat is easier to manage, Your whole operating system should fit on 2 CDs. Install the Ghost Image files on another partition of your hard drive for easier access & updating. Now & again copy the Ghost files to CD's Ghost will split the files into CD size portions, if told to do so. I have never had Ghost fail yet! Using Partition Magic, you can reformat the partition & reinstall the system in less than 20 minutes. Place the swap file on another partition & delete the file on 'C' Disable system restore & delete any restore files. These files can accumulate. Empty Explorer Cache.

2003-08-20 00:20:00 | Add to my message above:- The switch for Ghost command. ghost -split=650 -autoname Use High compression. The maximum file size on CD will be about 680mb with lead in and closure. Remember to close the CD's.
