168686 2003-08-19 10:00:00 A friend went to fire up her Packard Bell machine today and it gave a message about the registry being corrupt, and needing repairing. I did that but there is now no mouse or keyboard response. Both are USB. I haven't tried ps2 ones yet, as she had none. Is it likely to make a difference?

She has 3 CD's from Packard Bell labelled as CD Master 1,2 & 3. I can't read any of them. I presume they contain her win me installation and drivers, but how are they supposed to be used?

168687 2003-08-19 10:06:00 Hmm... sounds a bit odd.

The discs you discuss are probably a set of recovery disks - basically chuck Disc 1 in the drive and turn the PC on - it should come into a console type interface.

Be careful with these disks, some will repair an install, or install over the top, however a lot of them *cough*PC Company*cough* will just clear the drive and start again.

If you aren't sure about them, you might want to find a way of backing up the data on the drive before running the discs.

You may be able to repair the registry if you can boot into a command prompt.

Tap the F8 key every second or so as the computer starts up to get a Start Up Menu.

Choose Command prompt only.

Once you have a C:\> prompt, type in "scanreg /fix" without the " marks.

This will attempt to repair the registry.

168688 2003-08-19 10:09:00 I have tried booting from no 1 and tried exploring them all. No go wotz (335)
168689 2003-08-19 10:10:00 I did get scanreg done fine. Booted from a startup disk. wotz (335)
168690 2003-08-19 10:12:00 Have you checked the BIOS to make sure it is set to seek CD-Rom on boot? whiskeytangofoxtrot (438)
168691 2003-08-19 10:14:00 wotz,

There should also be a floppy disk that you use to start the re-install. As has been mentioned those are most likely recovery disks and will convert the computer back to it's original factory settings ie no personal data!

168692 2003-08-19 10:14:00 Yep, made it do that. I can't explore any of the disks on my computer. wotz (335)
168693 2003-08-19 10:17:00 Gorela, I would have thought any boot disk would be fine to get me started. Load CD drivers and run the setup from the CD. I can't see any files on the CD's. wotz (335)
168694 2003-08-19 10:17:00 That seems really odd, unless they are written in a format not supported by your machine (which I don't deem likely).

Did the scanreg resolve the problem or is it still ongoing?

I'd check those CD's in another PC - you should be able to view the contents.

168695 2003-08-19 10:18:00 scanreg fixed that problem. Checked them in my PC and can't see any files. Sorry to repeat but we are overlapping each other. wotz (335)
