If there is a factory boot disk this may contain specialist tools for installing/uncompressing the recovery disks.

IMHO recovery disks are a last resort - have you got the full error message available?

So if scanreg fixed the registry error what is happening now?

168698 2003-08-19 10:21:00 error message is gone. scanreg fixed that. The remaining problem is that the mouse and keyboard are not recognised, so startup stops at the windows password. wotz (335)
168699 2003-08-19 10:25:00 Tried switching the USB ports they are using? Seems weird that they have stopped responding all of a sudden - possibly something has been cooked on the motherboard.

If all else fails chuck on a bog standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse for testing purposes and check the USB drivers etc are all still there.

Your welcome for the scanreg fix

168700 2003-08-19 10:28:00 tried swapping them. Just have to find some ps2 replacements and try. The master disks still bother me though, if I want to try a reinstall. wotz (335)
168701 2003-08-21 09:21:00 Hi wotz,

If the Packard Bell is relatively recent (a couple of years old) the recovery disks need the floppy disk to unpackage them. It seems that they are compressed and the floppy enables them to be uncompressed. ;) The floppy can also hold a "magic" key that checks the computer to determine if certain specs have altered prior to allowing you to install.

There appears to be a specific program on the floppy that can enable you to reconfigure the system checksum, but I couldn't seem to get it to work :8}
