| 169163 | 2003-08-21 04:49:00 | The lastest Comsumer mag has a report on firewalls. In relation to the free firewalls, Zonealarm came ahead of Kerio. Infact Zonealarm was tops even against Nortons and the like. The report basically said that Zonealarm had good protection against in/out ports while Kerio seemed to lack out port control in comparison to Zonealarm. Would be interested to know users experience with both Zonealarm and Kerio and why you would consider one better over the other. Cheers |

Kerio provides total inwards/outwards control for apps, protocols and at port level, so I'm not sure where Consumer are coming from. It would be interesting to see the article, especially in light of current events. Cheers Murray P |

| 169167 | 2003-08-21 06:11:00 | No way that ZA is better than a correctly configured Kerio or Nortons - my guess is that they weren't total experts on the evaluation panel, or that they put more emphasis on the default or easy-use settings | Greg S (201) | ||

| 169171 | 2003-08-21 08:23:00 | For myself I have tried NIS Commercial, Zone alarm Commercial and free and Kerio Free. I am using Kerio Free and have no problems. I also use NeoTrace on various IP addresses when I want to know more about certain attacks. It's not often I need to use NeoTrace but I think it's for my own curiosity. My choice is Kerio. YMMV. |

I used to use ZoneAlarm a couple of years ago but had so much trouble when shutting down the computer with a Vector-something-or-other message that I ditched ZA and went to Outpost . No doubt later versions are more compatible/stable but I found Outpost excellent to use and stayed with that until I got my two computers networked . The free version of Outpost does not support ICS and that is when I migrated to Kerio, which does . Kerio requires a bit more brain power to use than either ZA or Outpost but once you take the time to learn it you have a lot of control . As far as the Consumer report goes, I take that with a big pinch of salt . Kerio was given a rather poor rating for outgoing detections/preventions but I question that . It has saved my bacon a couple of times, alerting me to outgoings that I traced to a trojan on the other computer that I would not have otherwise known about . At the end of the day you have to make your choice based on what suits you and your needs . |
