168981 2003-08-20 09:48:00 I'm currently doing a school website using Frontpage 2002 and I'm having trouble with the graphics. They don't show on the page until the whole picture is downloaded - not a good look!

All pictures are saved as progressive JPEGs and I've ticked this option when saving them into Frontpage - the other setting about number of scans is the one I'm not sure about.

What is the settings should I be using?

Thanks Lucy

168983 2003-08-20 10:08:00 The lack of progressive display (i.e increasing resolution as file loads) is a problem with jpgs on IE. Don't save them as progressive, and they will display 'filling down' as they load. :| wuppo (41)

Are you just sticking the images in to FrontPage after you have scanned them then resizing them in to FrontPage??? Or are you resizing them in your graphics Program????

168985 2003-08-20 10:47:00 Photos are from digital camera as well as scanned images of kids work etc. I'm using Infranview to edit resize etc not using Frontpage to resize or manipulate the image at all.
Will try suggestion not not save as progressive and see how that works out.
Thanks Lucy

168986 2003-08-20 12:33:00 Thanks Wuppo, your suggestion worked a treat - pictures now appear as they download instead of blank space .

Funny how "progressive" doesn't mean progressive at all! (Well anyway not for MS products!) :)

Knew I should have posted earlier instead of messing around and not getting anywhere .

168987 2003-08-21 17:32:00 Great stuff, and well done Wuppo.

Just a thought though... if your images are taking excessive time to display, then maybe it's the image file size that should be as much of a concern. Perhaps try your manipulations again to make them smaller. Research has shown that 90% of website visitors will leave the site/page if it takes more than 14 seconds to load. A nice idea is to keep any individual page under about 40KB, and make good use of thumbnail images of around 4 - 8KB with a link to the full size picture (and if it's very big then make a small notation next to the thumbnail of the full image file size, as a polite warning)

Yes, I'm aware graphic sizes & download times etc . It's a school site and parents want to see their little darlings artwork etc displayed so they will be prepared to wait for the file to download .

I've used thumbnails as links to the big files so the main pages do load quickly .

It was just that when a thumbnail link was followed nothing appeared on screen until the whole file was downloaded .

Cheers Lucy
