168912 2003-08-20 06:00:00 I have a rather large hard disk, 240GB, that I'd like to break up into more than 4 partitions unders Windows XP Pro. The HD (2 SATA 120G drives in RAID 0) are a bit bigger than I originally intended but I used the wrong last number when ordering :o)

Will converting the drive to a dynamic disk help? What implications would this have, e.g. reinstalling Windows which I do regularly...

Could I mount drives which point to folders on a forth large partition instead?

thanks
Nic

168913 2003-08-20 06:06:00 thats huge are you planning to go into video editing easiest way is to use Partition magic 8 like I do kiwibeat (304)
168914 2003-08-20 06:10:00 Trying to eek the last bit of speed out of my machine - so thought I'd upgrade the other bottle necks since the CPU don't have as much of an impact as they once did...

I run all my DVDs of the computer - so have ripped them to the disk... the eat space up very quickly.

168915 2003-08-20 06:39:00 I would just reinstall XP, since it doesn't hurt to have a nice fresh installation :) and Partition Magic takes a while too ..

Cheers

168917 2003-08-20 09:09:00 You can have 3 Primary partitions on a drive, only one primary will be active at a time, the others would be hidden, all would be 'C'. In addition to the Primary partitions you can have an extended partition with as many 'logical' partitions in it as you like.
All flavours of Windows must go in a Primary partition. Logical partitions are used for Linux & Data, Programs etc.
Put your XP on a small primary partition, about 3.5gb, this will enable you to make a Ghost Image which will fit on two CD's
If you are only having 1 Windows system, only have 1 Primary otherwise you will waste space.
I have 98 (because I use the Dos), ME, XP & Linux all on the same drive.

168918 2003-08-20 09:22:00 My experience of using a smallish partition for my Opsys (XP pro) is that my 5 gig partition is too small - I'd suggest around 10 gigs, because over time a lot of stuff ends up by default in your C ( eg IE didn't seem to offer me any option to install anywhere else). 168919 2003-08-20 10:35:00 ranish is a good free partition program. you can make up to 30+ partitions depending on which ver you are useing. what size to make them is up to you :) tweak'e (174)
