168896 2003-08-20 05:47:00 Now when I start my computer I go to a log in screen, and I have to enter my name. Then things work OK.How do I get rid of this log in nonsense? I have a 0ne-user computer. I have never set up any user accounts or required passwords. Today is the first time I have ever been in "user accounts". I did not alter anything. There seems to be nothing there to get rid of the log on screen. How do I get rid of it?

168897 2003-08-20 05:51:00 Windows XP? If you use TweakXp you can set it to automatically log you in. Although Windows automatically logs in a single user... Is the guest account enabled?

168898 2003-08-20 06:07:00 Guest is not enabled. Tweakui has a tick in the auto log in box. JJJJJ (528)
168899 2003-08-20 07:06:00 I cannot find the page right now, but was reading the other day that the one essential thing you should do in Win XP is password protect your Administrator account (ie the log on) to protect your computer from being hacked, particularly whilst being online .

It only takes a few seconds to log in and it said that it may save you from some grief one day .

If I find the article I will post it here, but it is something you might like to think about before doing what you are thinking of . :-)

168901 2003-08-20 09:58:00 That's all very well. But I'm not even slightly concerned about anyone getting in to it. I want to turn my computer on and then let it boot by itself. I've got no intention of writing in names and passwords and generaly mucking about with it. Antway I can't even remember my password to Press F1., so how am I supposed to remember numerous others?
All I want to do is get rid of the sign in screen. And I notice that the shut down screeen has changed too. I'm useing Classic view and the shut down screen looks like it may be the other one.
Yet everything else is classic.
Think I might go back to Dos and windows 3.1. But then my programs probably run with that.

168902 2003-08-20 11:41:00 Good old Black Viper, a very handy site (wonder if he's related to Black Adder, Susan??). Its excellent advice and ignored at your peril, and other computer users peril, as well, if your hacked and exploited to do harm elsewhere. All it takes is one email, virus, script loaded from a web site, malware, dialer or even apps or hardware/periferals you have installed yourself to mess with yours and others machines. And if you auto fill forms and logins on the web your even more vulnerable, at least give, some, protection to your home base.

168903 2003-08-20 12:30:00 OK, well at least you have been warned and now know the risks so it is up to you how you want to run and use your computer .

To get rid of the logon prompt, go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off > and put in a tick in "Use the Welcome Screen" .

Click Apply Options and things should now be how you want them . Let us know if they are not .

BTW, with this method you still have to click your account name to get into Windows even if you have not saved a password . I am not sure that you can start your computer and go straight to your desktop without bypassing the Welcome screen like Win 98, etc could do . If it is possible someone else may know how .

Yes there is a way to do this . My XP used to boot straight to the desktop, but I cannot remember how I did this now - sorry :) . But obviously it can be done .
