168858 2003-08-20 04:28:00 I bought an old Deskpro a few days ago and tried to start it up today but I keep getting this "starting Windows 95" screen on startup which then says something like C:\ and waits for me to type something. Problem is I have no idea what to type? I even tried getting past it with windows 98 boot disk and cd and it just comes up with a "remove media" message when I turn it on.

So how do I actually get the computer to start properly?

Well ... is Windows 95 actually installed on the harddrive?. The C:\ prompt you are seeing is a 'DOS' prompt. You could type DIR at that prompt and see if there is a WINDOWS 9or similar named) directory already on the drive. If there is try typing WIN and press enter to see if Win95 will try and start. There could be many other reasons that Win95 won't start but why not just install Windows95 for yourself... it did come with the cdrom/software?

Cheers, Babe.

Further to my last message if there is windows95 installed, then at that C:\ prompt try typing WIN /D:M and pressing enter to see if Windows95 will start in SAFE mode. Note there is a space between the N and the backslash (\) in the above command.

168862 2003-08-20 06:22:00 You could type "dir" and <Enter>.

It is very common for someone selling a computer to delete all the files except command.com. It will boot to the DOS prompt. :D "That's all, Doc."

It says it's booting Windows 95, because that's in the boot code. You might get a W95 screen, too. But you have been defenestrated.

Jeez Babe, bit early for the B & C isn't it? :O

168864 2003-08-21 05:27:00 If it shows the 'Starting Windows 95' message then some elements of 95 are present and I would guess that Graham L's explanation is probably right but there is another longshot possibility - that Win 95 is there OK but set to boot to the DOS prompt instead of right through into Windows. When it gets to the C:\ prompt type type msdos.sys /p then press Enter. This should display the contents of the msdos.sys file (which is a text file despite its .sys extension). Hit Enter to scroll from page to page if necessary. On the 1st page (I think) you should find a line which reads BootGUI=0 (or 1). If it is BootGUI=1 then the system should boot into fullblown Windows; if BootGUI=0 then it should boot to the DOS prompt (C:\) only.
If you need to change this setting to 1 either use the built-in Edit text editor or copy the file to a floppy and edit in on another cptr using, say, Notepad or any word processor. If the latter save the file as a text file. You may need to cancel the Hidden, System and Read-only file attributes and set it to Archive before you can edit the file. Save the file back to floppy and copy back to the original computer then restart it. If this was the cause of the problem it should now boot properly to Windows.

168865 2003-08-22 02:50:00 As a second thought, if you have "lots of free disk space", W95 is the last one where undelete still works. If you can find a DOS 6.22 bootable disk with that, you might (ahem) accidentally find that all the files have reappeared. :D Graham L (2)
168866 2003-08-22 09:59:00 If you haven't got a DOS 6.22 boot disc download the files from
bootdisk.com. If I haven't got that name right search this site for "boot disk" - the boot disc site has been mentioned here numerous times.

168867 2003-08-23 03:47:00 Ok well I have a windows 95 CD and windows 98 bootdisk but it still just boots to that stupid dos thing. When I try the 98 floppy it says "remove media" and when I try the win95 cd it simply ignores it and goes to the dos thing. ComputerWalrus (3973)
