2003-08-20 02:03:00 | All of a sudden, I got a DNS error on Google. I can get to anything that is housed in NZ, can get .co.nz site that I know is housed in US. Can't seem to see UK or Australian sites either. Using Xtra and ADSL. Been on hold for 21 minutes with Xtra, who's web page reports no known problems. Anyone else got the same problem or it is me? I haven't changed anything today. robo.

2003-08-20 02:07:00 | I'm positive I'm using Xtra's DNS and I have been able to view pages hosted overseas. You could just change your DNS to another ISP's one, they basically do the same thing. Change it back later if you feel you need to kept everything from the same ISP.

2003-08-20 02:23:00 | Yes, I wondered about that. Not sure if it would work. Bloody Xtra reported no problem even though I was on hold for nearly half an hour. Very grumpy. Chilling - interesting, didn't know that you were working there now. Can you email me? robo.

2003-08-20 03:03:00 | The DNS servers for XTRA are: Server: alien.xtra.co.nz Address: 202.27.184.3 Name: terminator.xtra.co.nz Address: 202.27.184.5 Cheers, Babe.

2003-08-20 03:10:00 | It is more likely to be an overseas DNS server giving the problem. They have been under attack at odd times. That would explain why Xtra don't know about any problem ... their DNS server was OK. You could access a co.nz site hosted overseas ... but because it's in the .nz top level domain, its DNS resolution would be done in NZ. So no problem. So changing your DNS server would strike the same problem. It's a hierarchical system. A server passes a request higher up the chain onlyif it can't resolve it. .nz addresses will be handled locally. Anything else which isn't cached in the local servers causes calls to the overseas ones.
