169098 2003-08-22 23:36:00 Here's an initalization string I found a bit of a whopper see what it does.
AT&FV1W2B0L2M1N1Q0X4Y0&C1&G2&K3&T5%E2K5-K2N4V0%C2A3+MS=56,1

Yes as per that site I agree with you- I did download aLUCENT.WIN 830.exe-not sure where I got that name from - it is on my scribble pad - but it does not appear to have made any difference-

Right am I back to where I started?Every thing suggests I should get far more speed- both connect(31.3) and downlaod speedav 3.2.
That initialization string- what do I do with that?

But your modem does not appear to use a Lucent chipset, so that may explain that.

It appears that your modem uses the Connexant (was Rockwell) chipset

There is also some remote possibility its an ISA modem?

Can you confirm that, as if it is its a full hardware modem.
If its ISA, the socket it plugs into will be a dark colour against the PCI sockets, which are white usually. The socket will usually be closest to the outside edge of the motherboard as well.

This is important Eddie, as ISA modems are usually the best type, equivalent to external serial modems.

169101 2003-08-23 03:36:00 Hi G F
The more I deal with you the more respect I have for your ability-this,not just b/s but meanful- thank you!
I had a phone call from my one time student-now a tech -just now - and he thinks that that is where I am in strife,as well.
Either way he says he will come fit another modem and set it going to my heart's content- and I don't think he was being cynical :-)
Though I regret monopolising F1 as it seems, I certainly learn a hell of a lot in the process- old age has ment me starting well behind the eightball so to speak- but it sure has kept my brain alive- something seven years ago , upon retiring, was a worry.
I think I will close this string and wait- thanks to all concerned.

169102 2003-08-23 03:40:00 Not too sure in XP but its probably very similar. go to
Control-Panel-Modems-hilite your modem- clickProperties -Connection-Advanced. then paste the init string into extra settings.
Motorola don't make dailup modems anymore and this appears to be a very early example of a winmodem because the current firmware is to upgrade the modem to Windows95, according to some sites( probably mean V90).

169103 2003-08-23 03:51:00 The early internal modems were almost all Hardware modems, using an ISA slot. If this is the case its got some value (particularly for the Linux community)

As Eddies PC is a 500 MHz CPU, it could well have one ISA slot for the modem.

That model is able to be flashed to V.90 (and is already), which suggests strongly its an ISA as well, with 1 Mb on board flash ram. With PCI that is done in the driver software, and not by flashing the modem ROM usually.

169104 2003-08-23 03:59:00 I agree with GF, RCV56DPF is a Rockwell/Conexant chip and the Lasat site only has external or ISA modems with the Safire tag, although windows is not necessarily going to report the manufacturer of the modem correctly, the chip should be right. Modem Help (http://www.modem-help.co.uk/) says this is a Rockwell ACF 1MB ROM flashable hard modem. No pci hard flashable modems are available in NZ to my knowledge. Going the Moterola option also suggests its a hard modem with a flashable ROM (I don't think Motorola make modem chips anymore, so may use another manufactures chip)

Best way to tell for sure, is to pull it out and get the No's off the stickers and chips. Then the correct drivers, firmware and strings can be applied (obtained from the seller/net).

If it is a hard modem it should perform better in your comp than a soft modem even if it is only because it provides less overhead on your system.

Cheers Murray P

PS. the revision does not seem to match Motorola or Lasat re the info I've looked at.

169105 2003-08-23 04:11:00 I am taking the LASAT name as spurious info, thats simply Eddie comparing the name lising against ATI3 command that was on the help page for the diagnostics, its not the name of his modem.

Also, while he lists the AT responses, there is an error in that he has used AT13 when its actually ATI3 (letter I not figure 1)

I am quite sure its a Motorola Surfer 56k Hardware ISA modem.

169106 2003-08-23 04:25:00 3 more posting while I typed, i need to improve my speed.

For you info: Lasat (www.lasat-usa.com), Modem Help Chipset Ref (www.modem-help.co.uk) (Motorola, just an eg), Modem Help Cip/Ref Seach (www.modem-help.com)

Hope that is enlightening and not fogging the issue. If you can stay with the modem you have that would be great beacause they are superior to PCI soft ones. It may only need a string or an update to optimise it but be carefull if flashing and installing drivers, some stick when they aren't wanted/don't work. See if there is an uninstall utility to undoe what is done if it goes awry. The Modem Help site can point you in the right direction if there is one available and gives tips and tricks for particular modems/chips, driver revisions and firmware.
