2003-08-21 00:29:00 | Hi, This might require Godfather or Susan B to answer but any port in a storm :-) Recently I have had discussion on this page as to how to improve my connection , and/or download speed. It was suggested I see if noise and pairing of lines was my trouble. I have, thanks to a Telecom friend, cleared any noise, and no pairing of the phone lines- and thanks to the gentleman involved. Now by trial and (t)error I think my only alternative is to replace my modem. It is a Standard ( as in a name) 56.600 and no drivers are available to improve speed- if in fact the driver was the fault. Can anybody give a name, or type, to an internal modem ( costs are a problem) that might even remotely improve things, and yet be within my penny pinching budget?. I understand that modems can be bought for around $30 - if this be correct I think it is trime to try one out. effie c

2003-08-21 00:45:00 | Hi Effie, I can understand your frustration with trying to get your internet speed up to what other people seem to have because I have been and am in the same boat . A little tip for you: before you rush off and buy another modem is it possible to borrow one out of someone else's computer (someone who has faster downloads than you, of course!) to see if it makes a difference? The reason I say that is because when I learnt that others were getting much better download speeds than me I changed my ISPs and switched to an external modem to try and improve things but speedwise it made very little difference . Someone eventually told me that even though I didn't think I was out in the wop wops I must still be too far from the exchange to ever be able to improve it so I either have to put up with it or move closer to an exchange . :D I am still glad that I got an external modem though, because it did improve connection reliablity a great deal, but they are not as cheap as an internal . Mine is a Dynalink brand and they have a good name so you might like to look at their internal ones . D-Link is another good brand and when Godfather turns up he may have other suggestions as well . Do see if you can test someone else's first though, in case you end up wasting your money . Good luck . :-)

2003-08-21 01:26:00 | Hi Eddie, A lot depends on your system and Operating System. More powerful systems running XP usually don't have much trouble with cheap Winmodems, although $30 sounds a bit nasty. If on the other hand you have an older system and OS your better off with a "Hardware" modem either internal(cheaper) or external. These modems don't rely on the CPU to do a lot of their work for them and don't take up as many resources as a Winmodem. They do cost tho' and you may have a bit of trouble locating one. They can also be a bit tricky to identify, sales people often don't know the difference. So you need to do a bit of research before buying. Another cheaper alternative is to get your present modem set up properly. Just about all modems have what is known as an FCC number. Look on the modem for FCC and a following number, this identifies the maker and usually the model of the modem. With that knowledge you can track down a specific driver and get it up and running properly. Look here to track down the make and model <www.fcc.gov Get back with specs, OS, connection speed etc

2003-08-21 01:49:00 | Rod ger: I have just delved back into Effie's history to find the answers to your questions and his system is/was Win98SE, 500Mjhz CPU in a 4 gb h/d. Effie has posted a few threads here on his modem problems and if you read the following ones you may understand of his dilemma a little more: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

2003-08-21 02:09:00 | Hi Ant, All I can see is Hardware ID moto1_gen and Driver Version 5.1.2535.0 -- manufacturer-- Standard Modem Types Port speed 115200 and there is nothing else that remotely states , "is connected with this problem" - and the "device is working properly" which shows in it's window. Actually to those of you who have replied - this download /connection speed appears to be endemic. I have a brother in a very new suburb - three years and using a seriesPlll has exactly the same download speed as me--- my suburb and this house is in the 33 year bracket.- but Smithie38 - in a slightly older suburb, than kid brother, - -about 6 years has more than double the download speed and a connection speed of 52, as compared to my 31.2 May be childish - but to me -"if it's there it has to work" - something that as a vehicle inspector in my day - irritated the hell out of customers when something, not needed for safety - was rejected by me However you are being very helpful and I am gratefull- just get this B****** thing working faster etc- "it's there- it's gotta work " :-) effie c

2003-08-21 02:15:00 | Thanks Susan, Eddie From the look of it you just have an old slow phone line, good enough for Telecoms standard, but not for a great internet connection. The only thing that I can offer you is tweaks and fine tuning. The best site I Know for this is here (home.aol.com), but be careful and make backups wherever needed. The Registry is not a place to be careless. Good luck.

2003-08-21 07:02:00 | Hmmmm. Could it be a motorola chip? From www.modemsite.com: As with any 56k modem, assuming you have a 56k-compatible line, the firmware (driver) for your modem is the single most important factor in the quality of your connection. While these modems will get 56k connects under some conditions, there are more interoperability problems with these modems - and you should check to see if new firmware is available for your modem. Eddie Take a look at this page (www.eicon.co.uk). What I'm looking for is all the information in the lower graphic. :)

2003-08-21 08:03:00 | i've been trying to speed my download up as well... one thing i realise was that the telephone lead going from the wall into your computer does infuence quite a bit got a cable from my friend and for some reason the modem just works better with that cable compared to my cable
