168881 2003-08-20 05:22:00 Will Office 97 work on Windows 95? What about the new OpenOffice... worth a go on an old '95 machine?

Need to open an Excel s/sheet and there's no app on the Win95 system - suggestions?

168882 2003-08-20 05:43:00 Well. I have loaded Office 97 successfully on a Win95 machine.

I can't remember, but I may of loaded Office 2000 on it too. :)

Its a P100 with 32 MB and 1GB of HDD, and I have upgraded it fully to Windows 98 *2nd ed* with Windows 2000. Its also quite stable.

Good luck ;-)

168883 2003-08-20 06:00:00 Yes - Office 97 works very well with W95 - make sure after you install, to get rid of the dreaded find fast feature!!

168884 2003-08-20 06:04:00 office 97 should work fine have it lying around somewhere if needed ,unlike its latest cousins which have become enormously bloated and resource hungry kiwibeat (304)
168885 2003-08-21 00:19:00 open office will run however it will be slow to open the programs. office 97 will run quicker. tweak'e (174)
168886 2003-08-21 01:19:00 I've had Office 2000, incl publisher etc working on Win 95. I think OfficeXP will only run on win98 and up. PoWa (203)
168887 2003-08-21 01:36:00 You said you need to open an Excel spreadsheet. If you only want to view one (ie don't need to edit it) you could download Excelviewer (or Excel97Viewer - can't remember which) from M$ which will let you do just that. Alternatively you could get just Excel 5 without the rest of the Office suite. Don't get Excel 4 because it won't open Excel 5 and later files. Robin S_ (86)
168888 2003-08-21 05:14:00 Halwende, Office97 runs well on Win95, it also contains Excel97 and Publisher97 and other small programs as well.

Of course, considering the next version of Windows was in 98 (obviously after Office 97 was released) . Office 97 would have to have worked in 95, otherwise it'd have been unusable for the few months until Win 98 was released :D
