| 169272 | 2003-08-21 11:02:00 | Running under win98se i get intermitent sound distortion--like a crackle when playing dvds(PwrDVD), and less frequently mp3s with jukebox4,WMP6.4. Other than the distortion the sound is fine. With DVD it comes after about one minute, can be coaxed away by entering the configuration dialog, upon which it returns three times about a minute apart, removed by the same process, and then usually stays away for the duration. With mp3s distortion might only come after hours of playing and goes away on restarting the application. --although it also tends to drop out alot leaving pops. Ive tried upgrading DirectX, reinstalling the sound card drivers (soundmax ad1881 on board intel 810 etc chipset MB) (MicroStar MS-6178L-M /Cel500 192M RAM). DirectX made some improvements, to the point where its a minor irit rather than a major pain. One possibly related thing is than PwrDVD set the drives to DMA (this was after a clean OS install), and since then cd reads have been really slow. Burns and installs happen quick enough, but copying files to HD is slow. Related maybe? I tend not to think that the box just doestn have enough grunt, becasue its predecessor ran it fine (cel333/128M). Ive got ide0 HDD, DVD, ide1 CDRW. Grateful for any thoughts. P |
