169321 2003-08-22 02:06:00 External Dynalink modem, can you be more specific Susan? USB, Ethernet, Serial?

If Serial, Ethernet, that's no problem but USB you may face trouble.

169322 2003-08-22 02:32:00 Susan, as your external modem is the exact same model as my old one it should be detected by Linux without any problem. SuSE and Lycoris both picked up the modem straight away, and Red Hat should be the same (athough I use a ADSL modem now). You might just need to make it go and take another look for the modem. 169323 2003-08-22 03:16:00 Knoppix is less likely to detect less common hardware than Red Hat. Red Hat is a full distribution. It loves external serial modems. :D Graham L (2)
169324 2003-08-22 06:34:00 Sorry Kame, I don't normally not practice what I preach. :8}

External Dynalink serial modem, model 1456VQE, ie the slow sort. :p

OK, I will take you guys' word for it that RedHat will be better at picking up the modem than Knoppix is. That is a relief, though I suspect there will be even more pressure to go the "whole hog" now. :D

169327 2003-08-22 20:59:00 I have a Dynalink 1456 VQE modem & it has been identified, no prob, by various flavours of linux (Mandrake, Redhat, Libranet) - so give it a go with Red Hat I'm sure it'll work. However, I got a USB modem for my old laptop, no way will that work with Linux ( I now use a Xircom PCMCIA modem which works perfectly with Linux Libranet). jcr1 (893)
169328 2003-08-22 23:43:00 Have got RH9 and it had no trouble with my external Dynalink modem. mikebartnz (21)
169329 2003-08-22 23:46:00 The trouble with USB modems is that they are much the same as WinModems. mikebartnz (21)
169330 2003-08-23 05:20:00 My WinModem was a breeze to setup, many thanks to Geoff Palmer and the utility he provided:
ScanModem!

Told me exactly what to look for, was great!
a 300kb download later, install the rpm, and Im done!
It was simple!
