169213 2003-08-21 06:59:00 I have a Windows 95 machine that has somehow lost its files and settings for connection to the internet, ie. there is no connection there and when I go to set it up again it says the files ain't there and to put the windows 95 setup cd in. It also doesn't shut down but just stays on the it is now safe to shut down your computer screen. This never used to happen and it used to shut down itself.

I suspect this is a virus but does anyone have a rough/ or certain idea of which one? if it is one at all of course.

169214 2003-08-21 07:16:00 Have you scanned the PC with an up to date antivirus software?

What happens when you put in the Win95 CD when it prompts for it, did it not repair the missing files?

This machine has no antivirus software, :P suprise suprise, but I will try installing an antivirus in the next few days. It is not often used for interent and there have been no recent downloads or email attachments opened on that computer. Most if not all mail comes to my other pc this other one is just an old slugger.

169216 2003-08-21 08:10:00 But Jen C is not dopey. Questions are asked for a reason.

I didn't notice that you put the Win95 disk in when asked.

Did you?

If so what was the result?

Your post seems to indicate that you believe a Virus has attacked the Win95 computer and you just want to know which virus.

You further state that you have a problem with the Internet connection.

No where in your post regarding the Internet do you mention what Modem, ADSL, Wireless connection, ISP you have.

There are a number of people on this forum that are quite happy to help.

Is that all you want to know?

Like most people here I just read what is posted. If I (or they) can help then we will.

Remember that we can't see what you can see on the Monitor in front of you.

IHTH.

Did I ever insinuate that Jen C was dopey? And I am quite aware that you cannot see what I see on the monitor in front of me, If you could I would very much envy you :P

Please excuse my first post in this thread as It was very rushed as I had other more important matters to address elsewhere. What I meant to say is...

My windows 95 machine has recently lost it's internet connection and as it seems some of the file required to set one up. eg. going to internet options then connections shows no connections are setup. Trying to set it up again results in the computer asking for files off the 95 install cd. Another problem which has popped up at the same time as this one (which I am assuming are related) is that when shutting the computer down it seems to freeze on the screen that states. "Please wait while windows shuts down you computer". With the only viable option left, to turn it off at the wall.

I have put the windows 95 cd back in and went to set up the connection again once it had finished copying files the machine restarted and my old internet connection was there again, so I know have access to the internet from that machine again. The modem is 28.8kbps if that is of any help at all.

I assumed this was a virus of some sort , but I will put that idea aside for the moment and ask if anyone has any idea what could be causing this problem?

p.s. Jen C if my post made it sound like you were dopey then I am truly sorry and I'm sure you know that.

169218 2003-08-21 09:08:00 No Sam, you never insinuated anything, and nor did I take any offense :)

I think what Elephant was getting at, was that I asked a question about inserting the 95 CD and you appeared to ignore that question. Thats all.

Cheers
Jen
