169881 2003-08-23 08:10:00 How can I get a command prompt on a Windows 2000 system, without Windows 2000 running. I have tried installing DOS but it wants to format my hard drive, I have tried pressing F8 when it tells me to but there is no Command Prompt. Is there a button like CTRL you can hold on Windows 98 system or is F8 that button.

Alternatively you could help me fix the following problems:

IsUninst.exe from C:\WINNT while the file is in use,
Copying fonts over to C:\WINNT\FONTS after windows tells me those fonts are there when they are not.

I am a command freak at heart and DOS prompt in Windows is just not as powerful.

Much Appreciated

169883 2003-08-23 08:21:00 Sorry hamster, too quick off the draw. You can get their by booting of your win2k cd if you need to repair or install of the disc. There is a console or whatever there. Otherwise you'll need a dos emulator, try google.

169884 2003-08-23 08:32:00 hamstar,

Well I guess you already know the following ... but anyway

The F8 options are:
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Debugging Mode
Directory Service Restore Mode (Windows 2000 Domain Controllers Only)

You can also use the Recovery Console
Boot from the Windows 2000 setup floppies and select the REPAIR option
Boot from the Windows 2000 CD (if supported by hardware) and select the REPAIR option
Install the console files on the local drice and make the Recovery Console part of the Boot Menu

For moving or deleting file in use on the system use the INUSE utility:
see INUSE Tool (www.microsoft.com) and How to Replace Currently Locked Files with Inuse.exe (support.microsoft.com)

Cheers, Babe.

169885 2003-08-23 23:55:00 Thanks for that guys. It worked a charm, I deleted uninstallsheild and can install stuff now. Only thing is even though logged onto C:/WINNT as my normal administrator user, it didn't let me access folders outside of the WINNT folder. Must be some sort of security thing to stop repairers mucking with other things. I'm gonna try juggling some files now. hamstar (4)
