169805 2003-08-23 06:01:00 Out of Curiousity, I read on a modding site that you could make your own rounded IDE cables by slicing the plastic between the wires and then tying the wires closer together with a cable tie. But, isn't there a reason IDE cables are flat? Isn't there interferance if the cables are close?

If so, why can you buy rounded cables?

169807 2003-08-23 06:23:00 I would recommend good quality rounded cables over ones you've made yourself. Also not all rounded cables are good. -=JM=- (16)

I'm thinking about getting some rounded IDE cables ... which ones (brands) should I avoid?

Cheers

169809 2003-08-23 06:36:00 You could make a rounded cable from a 40 wire IDE cable, but not an 80 wire one, as the earth screen wires would no longer separate the data wires.
I would imagine a round 80 wire equivalent IDE cable would have special construction to prevent cross-talk between the wires.

169810 2003-08-23 11:57:00 Seems that the article I had s now down :-(

What it was saying was that some of them have the wires just jammed in the connectors. The better ones have plastic over them to hold them in so they don't get pulled out so easily. I'm pretty sure that the ones in NZ from reputable dealers are of the better variety though.

Of course SATA is the way to go now which already has smaller cables.

169811 2003-08-23 12:18:00 Well Jen C.

I have two round 80 wire cables in my computer at the moment.

Bought from PBTech in Hamilton at around $16.00 each.

The only reason I put them in was to allow more airflow through the case and I thought it looked more tidy.

I have an AMD 2800+ CPU with a volcano 11 heatsink and fan.

The CPU seems to run around 35 - 45 degrees as near as I can tell.

I don't know what brand they were but my two hard drives, CDWriter and DVD drive all work happily.

169812 2003-08-23 12:21:00 Probably right...

Which is why I just bought a Motherboard with RAID and SATA on board.

I haven't bought a SATA drive yet though but I'm set for when I do.

169813 2003-08-23 12:37:00 Thanks JM and Elephant

My IDE cables look messy (2x HDD 1x CD-RW), even though I have them tucked up as much as possible. They also probably impede the air flow as I have a front 12cm fan which blows through my hard drive bay area. Temperature is not an issue at the moment with the cold weather, but it would be nice to have a tidier case.

You can get a set (2x IDE, !x Floppy) for $40 (in pretty blue or silver) so I think I will order myself a set :)

Errrkkkkkkk......

Mine are yellow.

For todays' hard drives and CD drives ensure you are getting 80 wire cables.

Try and ensure that you get the shortest that actually reaches the drives from the motherboard as well.

Less to tuck in. :-)
