169667 2003-08-22 20:13:00 I have a dual boot computer with windows XP and mandrake 9.1.
The modem is installed and works fine with XP but I cannot get mandrake to recognize it.
It is a intel 536 EP V92 hardware modem and should work.
The trouble is, I am not sure what I am doing as far as linux is concerned.
In the section where I have to install hardware, it should recognize the modem automatically but when I try to connect to the internet, the computer cannot fine it.
Can anybody show me what I should be typing in the appropriate boxes or tell me where I can go for information. Thank you,

I suggest you re-post this and put "installing modem on Linux" in the header. You might get more joy.
Personally, I don't know much about this but my knowledge of old fashioned Unix suggests that you have to get the drivers sorted yourself.

This is an internal PCI modem, right?

Its not a hardware modem as far as I am aware, its a HAM (Host Accellerated Modem) where the work is shared by the CPU and the modem. Another version of a WinModem.

True hardware PCI modems do exist but are few and far between in this country.

169670 2003-08-23 03:21:00 You have to set up the modem in Mandrake, take your international cd and go to configuration.
1)then mandrake donfiguration, click on RPM install and type in find window kernel-source, this will open kernel install, click to install.
2) then type in the find window kpp, this will give you what cd the dialer is to be downloaded from, install dialer.
3),you first have to download driver from intel boot to linux then you write it to CD, then you install the driver to a home folder under tar - intel 536ep.gz.
4) click on this folder to open, then right click on the folder inside, go down the tree to konsole, type su, then your root password, you are now in root.
5) type syntax make clean let it go through writing the files.
6)then type syntax make 536ep it will write the files here, final step type syntax make install, it will then install.
You then need to set up dialer which is self explanatory.
If confused go to linmodem .com
