| 169653 | 2003-08-22 15:21:00 | I recently had to restore XP Pro to it's 'last known working state' i.e in the bootup options along with Safe Mode etc. I have a few questions. First, exactly where does XP get the information for this? I gather from the most recently created System Restore point. Second I now have a problem with Windows Update listing critical updates I've previously installed. I'm certain this wasn't a problem before Windows did a restore. It looks as though some of them are listed in Add/Remove Programs and some aren't. The reason why I first asked what restore point is used, is because the previous restore point included all critical updates to that point. This is strange. I'm thinking the System Restore has caused the problem with Windows Update. If anyone has some expertise in this area it would be great to hear from you. Cheers |

Yep that is correct :) > Second I now have a problem with Windows Update > listing critical updates I've previously installed. > I'm certain this wasn't a problem before Windows did > a restore. Because any updates you did after that last System Restore point (the one your restored to) is now lost I hope that makes sense. > The reason why I first asked what restore point is > used, is because the previous restore point included > all critical updates to that point. This is strange. This is not really strange Because any updates you did before the last System Restore point will still be there, but any updates you did after that date (the one your restored to) you will have to re download I hope this helps :) PS: Richie Welcome To Press F1 :) |

| 169655 | 2003-08-23 09:21:00 | Stu thanks for your reply and welcome :) I need to clarify that when I said the previous restore point included all critical updates to that point, I actually meant the latest restore point included all critical updates available - not to 'that point' as I stated. So this is why I thought it was strange. What happened when I initiated the system restore was I had to select 'last known working state' from the boot options about 3 times as it would just return to the same screen with the boot options. The only way I was able to get the restore to work was go into safe mode, then reboot. Do you think selecting 'last known working state' 3 times could have rolled back the system by 3 restore points? If so this could explain the mystery. Cheers for your input. |

| 169656 | 2003-08-23 10:46:00 | You might of rolled your system back three restore points if you selected "last known working state" three times. Did you only just add all these critical updates within the last week? There should be a restore point available every 2-3 days. A lot of the updates when installed on the computer will automatically generated a System Restore checkpoint as well. System Restore has the option of undoing a restore point if you wish to try undoing one point. You will run the risk of the computer becoming unbootable again though. Presuming it was one of the new updates that caused you PC to become unstable, you may wish to download them one at a time, making a new restore point yourself each time prior to installing it. This way if you have to use System Restore again you will not lose as many updates.
