169757 2003-08-23 02:56:00 I have a Microtek E6 scanner with a SCSI interface. There has always been the problem that if the scanner was not powered on at boot time, the OS could not find it.

Under WIN98SE the work-around was to go to Device Manager and click refresh - this presumably polled around everywhere and found the (now switched on) scanner.

I can't find a similar facility under Win XP Home, so I am faced with the need to either leave the scanner on all the time or to reboot every time I want to scan.

Any ideas, anyone?

169758 2003-08-23 03:36:00 In XP you can go to device manager. Right click My Computer and click scan for hardware changes. Its the same as the previous refresh I think.

Tested in XP Pro. Hope its there in Home.

Of course, if I could get WinXP to retain the recognition...

169760 2003-08-23 04:07:00 While I have your attention, I posted a message a few days ago about getting WINXP to remember the folder view. I have found it impossible to make it stick, no matter what options or "make all folders like this" boxes I check - it always goes back to icon view.

Have you had this experience?

169761 2003-08-23 04:29:00 I know nothing about XP. :D But it's probably one of the new improvements, which is actually a good thing (:O), by not making permanent changes. Try logging out, and looking for a clickable box which asks if you want to keep changes. There will be something like this. Graham L (2)
