170197 2003-08-25 00:30:00 Well known problem. I've found the patch from here works fine.

www.microsoft.com

There's darn near books been written about the problem if the patch doesn't work. Google will find you heaps on the subject

170201 2003-08-25 10:57:00 Our XP system shut down is :- Push in & hold Power switch, after about 9seconds the Tin Box switches off, at 13 seconds the monitor turns off. Let go of switch. This is after the "Ok to shut down" screen. Bit of a nuiscance but I am not brave enough to go into the m/c & make it shut down any differently. Cowardly Poppa John. Poppa John (284)

do you have a network card installed ?

If you do, check to see if it has a Realtek 8029 chip.

I suffered hung shutdowns for 2 years after I installed D-Link DE-528 ethernet cards in 2 networked PCs running W98SE. Neither would shutdown unless the other was still on!

I found only 1 reference to this obscure problem after 2 years of searching the net, and it was from an IT student in the States. D-link were no help at all, just gave me the standard list of "try this and see" solutions.

It turns out that this particular chip was set to "TP/CX Auto Detect" and would continuously hunt for another connection if there was none curerent.

If this happens to be your problem get back to me and I'll give you the fix.

170204 2003-08-26 03:18:00 I had a similar problem with 8139 based cards. Updating the driver solved it. bmason (508)
