170093 2003-08-24 05:05:00 I got the scanmodem script on my linux operating system, ran the script and it spat out 2 files (modemdata.txt & modemdata.txt.2). How do I use these files to find out my winmodem's chipset and then download the appropriate driver?

P.S. I am using redhat 9.0.

Cheers
John

170094 2003-08-24 08:57:00 John, I'm having the same trouble with my redhat 9 install.
It seams like you have to be a computer expert to sort it out!
I have to boot in windows, surf to find some info. Then reboot in Linux and try to fix the modem issue. I've just about had enough! Maybe windows isn't that bad after all.
The driver has to match the exact version of the kernal.
The thing that gets me is most of the people that hand out the advise ashume(?) that we are experts as well.
Let us know if you sort it out....

170097 2003-08-24 09:54:00 Yes, Im living proof it works coming from a strong Windows background... So's CyberChuck.. and many other of my recent "Instant Messaging victims" as such, lol ;-) Chilling_Silently (228)

AN AC'97 Controller controls the modem Subsystem

First accessing chipset provider and modem assembler information
for the modem SubSystem under the AC'97 or MC97 Controller .

=== Checking 1039 through chipset providers and modem assemblers ====

Vendor 1039 is SiS, Silicon Integrated System .
Some of their modems under AC'97/MC97 Controllers are served by the SmartLink slmdm-2 . 7 . 10 drivers,
or preferable the most current version for those "Smart Link HAMR5600 compatible" .

Vendor=8086 is Intel, Inc . producing HaM and 536ep host controller free (HCF) modems, the 537 soft modem
and AC'97 and MC97 controllers managing a varierty of non-Intel soft modem subSystems . These subSystems
will in general not have Intel PCI_IDs .

Download drivers from: . intel . com/design/modems/support/drivers . htm" target="_blank">developer . intel . com
Also check at: . technion . ac . il/resources . html" target="_blank">linmodems . technion . ac . il
for early releases and perhaps already compiled drivers .

Formal support for Intel 537 chipset soft modems
is expected by the Fall of 2003, available then at
. intel . com/design/modems/support/drivers_linux . htm" target="_blank">developer . intel . com
and perhaps a bit earlier in the Intel section of:
. technion . ac . il/resources . html" target="_blank">linmodems . technion . ac . il
The Intel 537 chipsets are sold to a variety of modem assemblers
that specify there own PCI_IDs .
Some are supported by SmartLink drivers .

cat<<END>>/tmp/modem/ModemData . txt

Vendor=1813 Ambient Tech was acquired by Intel with its HaM (Host assisted Modem) chipsets .
With exception of those with PCI_ID 1813:4100 modems, see message:
. org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?1:mss:9448:200210:fbhcoigfcimgkjdedjad" target="_blank">linmodems . org
all the HaM modems have been supported .
HOWEVER, further maintainence is being discontinued, in favor of the newer Intel 536ep and 537 soft modems .
Thus HaM failures can be expected for the emerging 2 . 6 . nn kernels,
and perhaps soon after 2 . 4 . 21 because of changes in the serial interface .

The soft modem Subsystem: 1039:7013
serving under the controller:
PCI_ID=1039:7013, Modem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Intel 537 [56k Winmodem] (rev a0)
may be supported by the SmartLink slmdm-2 . 7 . 10 drivers .
For versions after 2 . 7 . 10 the drivers may load, but there will be a failure to dial correctly!!
See the related supoort table listing in /tmp/modem/ModemData . txt . 2

Vendor 163c is SmartLink, http://www . smlink . com/ with EXCELLENT Linux support!

170099 2003-08-25 11:58:00 Have a read through and it tells you the relevant things to try on google, in this case its:
slmdm-2.7.10

So, I went to google and searched and came up with the following:

170100 2003-08-25 11:58:00 Hmm... Just realised they're not for RedHat 9...

Have a look around, there's bound to be some out there :-)
