170050 2003-08-24 04:02:00 yeah well and i thought having a new puter and all that goes with it would be a great boost to my system.... restore my faith as it were....

LOL i was wrong.

did some updates this week right? and then waited for all to book out and every thing is shut down and lo and behold it wont restart............ just a beeping all the time a beeping.....

and i was stumped had done nothing and changed nothing and now what ? rang the puter man who supplied it and he heard it a beeping too over the phone so he comes out (on a sunday) and in minutes has it reset and changed a few settings and he thinks it may be a faulty memory stick?
but if it doesnt do it again then we are ok, but to let him know if and when it happens again... call him immediatly and hell come out again and we'll go from there..

so what im asking is anyideas on this people why it coulda done this?
it's running win XP home, and its only a few weeks old....
and i have a total mind blank as to why it did this.
i have AVG,
and the only changes were the updates this week as far as im aware, and ive got all the appropriate patchs up till now....

help
im not to concered at mo but the other puter is not here so my access to the net is cut and all phone / callista stuff is stopped if puter is not going and i cant get online to ask pf1 for help.....

thanxs
all replies appreciated.

170051 2003-08-24 04:07:00 Computers have really enriched your life. :D All the exciting and interesting things they have done. :_|

Take heart. If a part fails, it's most likely to do it in the first few hours. Once it has run for a week, it should run for "ever" . (If it's left alone ... hardware is just like software : best left alone as long as it is working).

170052 2003-08-24 04:18:00 All electronics has a failure rate, just the way it is. The early failures are classified as "infant mortality" and happen within the first 6 months. Then all goes well until age sets in, when faults will increase.
Guess you were just lucky :D

170054 2003-08-24 08:57:00 If it happens again (and we hope it never does) listen carefully to the beeps. Count the beeps in the sequence, note if they are long or short etc.

There is info on the web to decode what the problem is by the pattern of beeps. Info is available here (www.pcguide.com) and also on another 9,000 sites ...

170056 2003-08-24 10:06:00 beetle if the supplier suspects a faulty stick of memory get them to swap it out and test it. It might be ok for awhile then give trouble again when under load. You could try testing it yourself with something like SySoft Sandra's memory burn in module, if it fails it might be best to exclude the burn in test from your info to the vendor.

See Billy T's thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) re faulty memory for an idea of the odd problems it can throw at you.
