169996 2003-08-23 23:27:00 Hi all
Just installed redhat 9, install was a breeze apart from the modem. The modem I have is listed neen I ran check modem as
14F1 = CONEXANT
127A = ROCKWEL
8086 = ICH
1106 = VIA
10DE = NVIDIA
Can someone talk me through how to selcet the right modem and set up my internet connection. It loaded a generic modem, but when you try and activate it it just sit doing nothing.

Also the whole thing seams slow, I thought it was ment to be fast! To run Open Office it takes about 2 minutes to load!
Any ideas?

Many thanks Dave

169997 2003-08-23 23:56:00 If it is an internal modem it is likely it will be a winmodem ie a windows only modem.
Dont worry though... go to www.linmodem.org and d/l the scanmodem utility and run it.
It will id your modem and suggest a site to get a driver.
This work with Mandrake Linux so I think Redhat should be the same.

As for openoffice it is slow to load, what are your machine specs???.

169999 2003-08-24 00:48:00 Thanks
I ran check modem, it listed the modem and driver which I downloaded. It ended with .rpm which I understand is an installer type file.
What I need help wth is selecting this drver once its installed. The naming convention an file locations have got me a bit lost! Still learning my way around....

The system is 500 Celeron.

Its still a winmodem. Its equivilant to the connexant HCF based ones.

170001 2003-08-24 02:35:00 It looks like its a connexant one (although you never said):

Have you read the isntructions at:

www.linuxant.com or
www.linuxant.com depending on the type you have.

With the redhat rpm all you should have to do is double click the rpm to install it.

Once its installed use kpp (or another dialer) and use the query modem option to check it responds.

170002 2003-08-24 02:43:00 Takes foot out of one's mouth.;).I've read elsewhere that even some exteral modems are "winmodems" You live and learn.......... mark.p (383)
170003 2003-08-24 04:11:00 Are you meaning the ScanModem tool that Geoff Palmer put on the PCW Cover Disc a month or so back?

Read the Output files (Scanmodem.txt) that it creates and post the contents here!

170005 2003-08-24 09:24:00 I've just uploaded the ScanModem.gz file to my website, its really tiny.. run that and post the contents of it:

www.rescuemannz.orcon.net.nz

Or you can just wait for somebody who can help you with ListModem... :-)
