in my case the problem was not driver related . . . at least, I was not able to solve the problem with much playing around with alternative drivers .

The "auto detect" is programmed in the chip and required a special utility produced by Realtek to make changes to the firmware .

Just for the record the dos utility is:

RSET8029 . exe

downloaded through a google search .
