Let me re-express the issue: Apart from some occasional juvenile excesses and bad behaviour that Bruce has to deal with, perhaps unwittingly you lead the "unintentionally sarcastic, sardonic, occasionally humorous but otherwise generally pointless comment" brigade by a country mile . You seem to have completely lost sight of the purpose of this Forum, which is to help people with computing issues, with perhaps the occasional off-topic excursion to inform or amuse . I acknowledge you mean no harm, and I guess most Forum users have got used to simply ignoring you, but that does not alter the fact that your comments are often pointed, pointless or both . As the saying attributed to another Thomas goes: There are none so blind as those who will not see . (Works of Thomas Chalkley, 1713) At this point I shall retire gracefully from this thread, before it becomes another acrimonious and meaningless debate for the reasons so aptly described by Mr Chalkley 290 years ago (give or take) . Other forums (many of which are free) provide a much wider range of options and features such as editing posts, ability to post code blocks, better quoting and so on. However my favourite feature would have to be the ignore button. It most certainly has it's uses in many cases. Thus instead of having to view or endure the drivel a small box stating "This person is on your ignore list, to view their post click here" is displayed. Much more unobtrusive. I'm surprised PF1 being the tome of IT knowledge it is hasn't upgraded to better forum software by now. This seems rather archaic. |

| 169950 | 2003-08-24 23:28:00 | Whoooa Billy. I enjoy Thomas's bon mots and witticisms. I have never had a sense of the uncharitable from his comments. It can be difficult posting on a mono-communication template. Voice tone, facial expressions, and other language cues are lost with emoticons the only moderating device. A quick comment typed on the spur of the moment and meant to be amusing can be completely reinterpreted as sarcastic because it is stripped of the wry smile of the creator. Perhaps there is a lesson for us here. Construct a post and then go away from it for a couple of minutes before reviewing that the tone is what we intend. No offence Billy. Your comments are rational and honest. I just think that Thomas deserves a bit of backup. Cheers Winston ;) |
