170589 2003-08-26 01:03:00 hi!
ive signed up with a new isp,its cheap i would say its name but it mite kill me for defamation

my problem is:
for approx 10days ivehad it- i cant connect .only once on 25 tries

and today it took about 30 dial ups to get online,
lastnite on my dads 1.6ghz,i treid auto dialing for 1hr,didnt work.

today i finally received an email which explains my dial up settings-took long enuf!!!!

when i dial up -
u know how it starts talkn,
about halfway thru, one of the tones are quieter than normal, then it keepd repeating the same warbly tone for approx 30seconds,continous-
then it clicks, and says sorry cant connect to this pc.

funny thing is when i dont put in a password,it makes the correct noise! but then at the checking password bit it stops :P

so whatd going on//

they do list some DNS things-do i need to input those into the connection/? i remember doin those back in the old days of netscape 2..

but that is near some email configs,so i presume its only for that.

btw my win95 133 can connect,the 1.6ghz cant

i think il change back to my old isp paradise :-D
Thanks
_mike

170590 2003-08-26 01:09:00 Can I assume you are using a different modem on the two machines? Is it worth trying the other modem on the problem PC?
I am assuming you have checked all the settings. I would be be very surprised if it was a problem at the ISP end.

170591 2003-08-26 01:47:00 back 4 years ago.i had a modem which made the noise but u know the lost tone of the noise.Well my modem was yelling it for about 30 seconds.then it connected.I found it was a faulty modem.I reckon u should try using your old modem.
My isp paradise has the dns .I've typed it in and left it out.Makes no difference on the connection.IF anyone can tell me whats the different then i would be very happy!!

170592 2003-08-26 04:08:00 I haven't been on dialup in ages but I can still whistle it's tune, time for a song I think.

I'm assuming your modem was fine until the new ISP, you say it's cheap, then obviously a lot of people have found that too and have all moved to it and degraded their service.

Just mention the ISP, that way other people can realise the service they are giving and make their own minds up on it. But before blaming them, go through all neccessary steps to make sure it's not your fault.

I still think if you just switched over and your other ISP was working fine then it's obviously the new ISP.

yep it used paradise fine >with no dns #s<

OH the 1.6ghz had troubles connecting to paradise even tho the 133 connected first time everytime

i just connected now- with 1 DNS <primay> # in there,it took about 20tries,so i shoved one in there, and it works!il see if i keep it in if it connects more :-P

it is a strange noise.

i think that the 1.6ghz USB modem has trobles no matter what,so il only report the 133,the modems work fine with paradise for ages as i said,i mite move back

my mate doesn t have to dial 30x :Pand he has same new ISp.

its strange hearing it keep going continously for ages then telling me its nto going,i stop it to save time
<no autodialer/recconct function on this 133mhz

:^)

it says-
the computer u have dialed is not answering, try again later

with other people,do they get the huge long warbley tone,if the isp is busy??

170595 2003-08-26 05:48:00 You do not need to add DNS as they are server assigned anyway if this was incorrect it would not stop you connecting but give problems receiving traffic.

What you are getting is typical of a 56k modem trying to connect too fast for the line conditions.
Wher in NZ are you situated.

Your other computer probably has an older modem such as a 33k and does not have this problem.

You need to add extra setting to your modem.
What is the modem type and your Windows system and I will give you the correct settings

170596 2003-08-26 06:47:00 Maybe that's why they are a cheap ISP? Jester (13)
170597 2003-08-26 06:52:00 Hi Jim B,
Sorry to butt in here but while you are waiting for toxicbass to get
back to you.. can you give an extra setting for my Acer Travelmate 280 modem?
It's a Agere Systems AC97 ( ex Lucent I believe ) 56 k which is too fast for my line here at home
Works well every where else but :-(
