170563 2003-08-26 00:10:00 My computer is Pentium 4 with 40gig hard drive. the red light on the box keeps trying to activate all the time even when I am not doing anything. I have spyware and virus checkers etc and have checked all the startups but still it keeps flashing. can you please suggest anything else.

170564 2003-08-26 00:21:00 Many reasons, such as:

Virus Scanning software operating in the background, scanning files

Indexing service or MS Office "fast find" indexing the files for quick search reference.

Not sure what operating system you are using, if it was XP you could Ctrl - Alt - Del to bring up Task Manager and see which processes are running.

170565 2003-08-26 00:25:00 I am running win 98SE and I have turned all the virus checkers off. This has only started in the last 3-4 days

170566 2003-08-26 02:18:00 How much free space have you on the Hard Drive??? If you are running out you may be reducing your virtual memory space.
But its probably one of the things GF indicated. Do the Ctrl/Alt/Del thing and see whats running.

170567 2003-08-26 23:12:00 I once had a similar problem and traced it to Norton Anti-Virus. Still don't know why it did it but a clean out of NAV and reinstall, complete with latest updates fixed it. Fire-and-Ice (3910)
170568 2003-08-27 07:06:00 Thanks to Godfather, rod ger and fire and ice I have done what every body suggested but still no joy. Will the red light constantly flashing do any harm to the Hard drive. Should I just do a reformat of the hard drive.

More help please

170570 2003-08-27 10:05:00 whats intergrator 2002?? kiwibeat (304)
170571 2003-08-27 22:34:00 Hi Rod ger I only have systray and explorer running . I have ditched everything else and have been to msconfig and turned off every thin there and turned on again only what was necessary. I think the Norton Integrator is another update 2002 for system works.

Should I now think about reformatting. and will this problem cause trouble to the hard drive.

170572 2003-08-28 00:05:00 Not yet we just have to narrow it down. Unless you find out what it is its likley to be a repeat problem.
OK Next go Start\programs accessories\system tools\system information, then click on Software Envioment in the left hand column to expand it then click on running tasks.

Take a note of anything that looks as if it might have potential ie anything that is not Microsoft or any thing that looks as if it might be checking settings. If you are not sure it is possible to copy and paste the names so we can have a look. This should rule in\out software one way or another.
