170442 2003-08-25 08:38:00 Hi Team

I'm finding the bugs in SystemWorks bit by bit (pardon the sort-of pun).

If I close PF1 I have to log on again as something is blocking the recording of cookies. I can't configure webclean to keep the cookie if it isn't allowed in to start with. :(

Any ideas or experience of this out there?

Cheers

170443 2003-08-25 08:45:00 NSW Pro 2003 doesn't kill my cookies for PF1.

Have you tried whilst still logged on to PF1 going to Web Cleanup > Options and then add PF1 domain and select keep cookies?

Yes, I did that and the cookie is allowed in to the cookie folder, but if I close PF1, I have to log in again. It seems that although the cookie is there, the website can't see it.

This is the same on both a W98 box and W2K so it appears to be a programming issue rather than a fault of some kind.

I killed off all Norton processes in the startup menu but that didn't help. I guess the next thing to do is disable NAV and see if that is the cause. I can't find anything at all in the program options that could influence cookies other than the Web Clean function and there I have entered pressf1.pcworld.co.nz as the domain (is this enough?) and ticked all three options.

I have just turned off Safety Sweep as well, though that seems remote from the problem, and I have RTFM and RTF help files till I'm blue in the face and I am no closer to a solution. :(

170446 2003-08-26 10:57:00 Did you reinstall or upgraded IE lately Billy.on both comps? Could be the settings have reverted to default + security is a little different, if you have chaned IE that is.

170447 2003-08-26 11:07:00 Yes I have Murray!

In preparation for various upgrading exercises and the installation of SystemWorks I upgraded the W98 box to IE 5.5 Sp1, and the W2K box to IE 6. Both ran stably and reliably after the upgrade before I took the next step of uninstalling the old NAV 2001 & Ghost 2001 and installing SystemWorks.

So something may have slipped in the security dept?

Since my last post I am now able to see that the cookies appear in the cookies folder, but when I close PF1 they are deleted, but not everytime!! Once in a blue moon the PF1 cookie stays put and I can log back in without using my password etc.

Any suggestions on where to look in IE? I am getting a bit weary on this one and I don't trust my own judgement at the moment.

Cheers

170448 2003-08-26 11:43:00 I've just fired up IE 6 sp1 (I use Firebird now, mainly) Go to the Tools menu > Internet Options > Security tab > Custom Level button, scroll to the bottom to User Authentication: Logon. Whats your setting there, it can have a bearing on how you connect and server permissions, but I'm not sure how it will effect your PF1 logon. Next cruise over to the Privacy tab and choose the Advanced tab. make sure Overide Automatic Cooky Handling is checked > I allow cookies /session and block third party (BTW. Firebird allows you to retain the cookies you want and block the rest or only allow per session while keeping your favoured, much like your firewall setup, Agnitum Outpost firewall was great in that way too) which brings me to a point, you could check Prompt, there is an option in IE 6 to keep cookies now "Apply my decision for all cookies from this site" at the prompted box. Thirdly head over to advanced and look for "Save Data for Forms" or such like, can't find it right now and have not used auto complete for yonks or save data to forms, ever in IE for safety reasons (Just started using "saved form infornation" with Firebird for PF1 only).

As I don't have NSW I can't help you with that but my experience with bundled security programs has been less than satisfactory and its mostly the firewall, besides myself, that has caused the gripes. You could use NSW for its anti-virus and tools and get a firewall like Kerio to do the rest, you'd need to disable the NSW firewall to save a cat fight.

170449 2003-08-26 11:55:00 Check that Use Auto Complete for Usernames and passwords is selected.

IE Tools/ Internet Options
Content and select Auto Complete

170450 2003-08-26 12:32:00 No wonder I couldn't find it under advanced Jim, it weren't there :( has that changed from an earlier version or have I been ignoring it for too long?

170451 2003-08-26 12:47:00 OOOOOOOkay

Checked all those things and nothing helped. :(

I even tried setting the cookies to read-only, and the first time I reopened PF1 it worked, the second time it didn't. The cookies stayed in place but I guess they were no longer up to date.

What happens is that Web Clean allows another set of cookies to be installed, but about 10 seconds after I exit PF1 they are automatically deleted.

My Firewall is ZoneAlarm and I have made no changes to the cookie settings there (and it can't delete cookies) IE is configured as it always was and it doesn't delete cookies either.

I have searched the SystemWorks Help files from top to bottom but can't find any reference to autodelete of cookies, nor am I aware of any firewall in the NSW installation. Anyway, they are not being blocked, they are deleted.

It seems clear to me that one or other feature of NSW is sweeping my cookies folder on closing of the browser window or closing of a connection to an internet site (I have jetstream so my connection never closes).

It seems logical that either Cleansweep or Web Tools are responsible, but I'll be buggered if I can find what it is. I disabled Safetysweep but that didn't help either.

I even killed every Norton item in the startup menu and still the little sods disappeared.

Any more pearls of wisdom? :8}

Cheers
