170476 2003-08-25 11:43:00 That'll teach me for messing round with the registry! I created a user profile on my w2k system that would give access to only games - at least that was the idea. :-| I utilized Winguides.com and their Regguide but it backfired on me.

In the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\ key I created some entries such as NoClose and NoWinKeys and NoViewContextMenu all with a Hex value of 1 to activate them. I hid My computer as well and most of the start menu but left My documents as it was.

Now when I go to My Documents or My Computer in my own user profile, it starts up the search window! ?:| So I go through the expanding My Computer menu on my start menu and double click a folder to open it but it acts like it's lost the file extension and tells me it has no program to open it with!

What have I done and how can I remedy it short of reinstalling windows?

Hope someone knows what to do...:_|
Cheers

170477 2003-08-25 11:46:00 And you didn't back up the registry beforehand? PoWa (203)
170478 2003-08-25 11:59:00 *Smacks Head* Of course not, I'm a dumbass wocky! Would SystemWorks 2003 hve done it automatically, or is there a auto-repair feature? I haven't done any manual backups.:( hamstar (4)
170479 2003-08-25 12:28:00 Can you log into your machine as "Administrator" , then delete the registry keys you created??

Ctrl + Alt + del key twice should bring it up on XP.

If worst comes to the worst, I can send you that whole registry folder and you can apply it to your registry

Oh, nah see I created the profile as administrator and was going to change it later, so I could do all the editing from that user, but after finding the problems on my own profile, I went back and deleted the DWORDs but no difference. All the reg changes were made to only that profile. Or so I thought.

170481 2003-08-25 12:52:00 Would reinstalling win2000 do any damage to my settings? Reinstalling Windows is one of cold_fu5ion's hobbies.

>If worst comes to the worst, I can send you that whole registry folder and you can apply it to your registry
But that could be helpful if reinst will wipe my settings.

170482 2003-08-25 13:14:00 win2k has a backup/repair feature . you can choose the last known good system, ie, registry . The following is from win2k help .

To start Windows 2000 using the last known good configuration

Click Options, and then click Print to print these instructions . They will not be available after you shut down your computer in step 2 .
Click Start, and then click Shut Down .
Click Restart, and then click OK .
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8 .
Use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER .
NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function .

Use the arrow keys to highlight an operating system, and then press ENTER .
Notes

Choosing Last Known Good Configuration provides a way to recover from problems such as a newly added driver that may be incorrect for your hardware . It does not solve problems caused by corrupted or missing drivers or files .
When you choose Last Known Good Configuration, Windows 2000 restores information in registry key HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet only . Any changes you have made in other registry keys remain .

If that doesn't help (not the same registry key) reinstall windows over the top of your existing one by booting to your win2k CD and choosing install or repair .

I was about to do that when something happened, I don't know what but now all my shits back to normal! I dunno how. I was playing around with the registry again (no, I am not a fast learner) and I logged back into my one and da-da! Back to normal. :D I'll be deleting that profile now...

?:| Still stumped as to what actually happened there...

Thanks guys for all your help...
