Back in the good old days when the tubes were made of zinc foil, they could be flattened and rolled up...plastic tubes can't be rolled up. ;)....except if you have the gizmo....

I like to use a right angle corner with a sharper corner than the one in the photo, and hold one hand each end and apply a bit of tension as I move the paste up.

We assumed that you would Plod , what is in question is the last bit. are you happy to leave a some in tube, or do you keep going till you get blood on your fingers?
