171005 2003-08-27 20:41:00 How exactly do you do a Destructive System Restore in XP?

Thanks,
Loopy (3187)
171006 2003-08-27 21:15:00 Can't say that I have ever heard of the term. Some PCs have a restore partition on them for the clean install, are you sure you really want that? You'll lose all data and apps.

171007 2003-08-28 03:47:00 I've used the term a couple of times. :_|

My neighbours' daughter needed a new PC. It came with WinME. It fell over in a month. System restore restored it to "as installed". There weren't any save points. That's how it was configured by the vendor. It wasn't popular. Loading the older version of Office I gave them --- all 16 floppies of it -- takes a while.

It fell over again a month later. It hadn't saved the save points I told it to the previous time. I used appropriate words and tried again. It hasn't failed since (except for the CD which died and was replaced promptly)., so I don't know if I have suceeded in giving them some protection. They use floppies to backup their schoolwork. :D

171008 2003-08-28 04:08:00 I take it you want to reformat and reinstall WinXP from scratch.

You just need to boot up your PC with the WinXP installation disk in the CD drive and select continue setup at the welcome screen (not repair).

A easy graphical guide can be found here:

Windows XP Home Install Guide (www.blackviper.com)
or
Windows XP Professional Install Guide (www.blackviper.com)

As Robo said, doing this will lose all your data/applications so make sure you back up to CD what you want to keep first. Also check that you have all your motherboard/sound drivers, application installation disks, printer software/drivers, scanner software/drivers etc handy before you start.

Also, it would pay to download the microsoft patch to prevent the blaster worm and keep it on a floppy so that it can be reinstalled prior to going back onto the internet.

If you do not want to reformat/reinstall, perhaps you could explain in more detail what you want to do.
