170818 2003-08-27 00:28:00 my antivirus system(AVG) tells me that i have -worm/lovsan.A - in file
C:\system volume information.
When I try to access the file i get the message - Access denied - file is inaccessible
I am sure that i need to delete the file because i am being pushed off system.
when I run AVG test - daily - i get a No virus Detected report.
Help - please

170819 2003-08-27 00:32:00 The virus is in one of your system restore files. It will not run from there unless your PC uses the restore function, to restore to an earlier time. Best to turn restore off, restart PC, then turn restore back on. This deletes all old restore points, and the virus amongst it. Pheonix (280)
170820 2003-08-27 02:33:00 Thank you -will do .
as a matter of 'useless'info - while i was reading some of your other messages - iwas booted off - with message about rpc terminating unexpectedly . also AVG residenr shield told me virus was in c:\system32\tptp2656.
hopefullt will be remedied when i do the restore bit - ta again

170821 2003-08-27 02:52:00 hello again- havee done that and created new restore point for today.
i noticed that used space on my hard drive dropped by almost 50%!!!!! is that a bonus for doing this exercise.
What about the Automatic updates to install the patch to stop this virus? should i do them again ??
also i have windowsxp firewall operating . how come the virus got in anyway - isn't teh xp firewall much good??Ta

170822 2003-08-27 04:09:00 It is a bit of a mystery how you got that virus if you have the Win XP firewall enabled and your computer has all of its updates installed. Maybe you could go to Microsoft's update site (v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and check that you do actually have all the updates. Susan B (19)
170823 2003-08-27 04:09:00 Your automatic updates will still be there as you haven't "gone back in time" by using the restore. Just ensure the AVG is up-to-date and rescan the computer with it.
Yes, it does chew up quite a bit of space with restore. Don't panic, because windows will soon fill it up :)
Get the removal tool here (www.sarc.com) and run it just to make sure it is killed properly.
The XP firewall is only half a firewall. It stops certain things from entering your PC from the internet, but doesn't let you know if something is trying to access the internet without your knowledge or approval. The free firewalls are better and recommended such as zonealarm, kerio , tiny firewall.
Just ensure that if you do use another firewall, to turn off the XP one. They MAY fight each other and they may both lose.

170824 2003-08-27 04:25:00 I am feeling mor comfortable now - have checked my avg (free version)and it says it is upto date - last version = 19 august.
Last week i went to trend micro and ran housecall and noticed that it checked 22800 files whereas avg only checks some 16000 - does that mean that avg misses some -Ta again

170825 2003-08-27 04:36:00 As to the number of files checked you can stipulate what files the anti-virus scanner has to check eg if it should check inside zip files or not.
Some of the very neccessary ones are *.exe; *.com; *.pif; *.scr; *.bat the defaults set are usually good enough.
