170767 2003-08-26 15:40:00 I think I'm correct in believing that, like Cable Internet, NZ ADSL speed performance degrades the more people are using it online at the same time. If this is the case, then I wholeheartedly support Telecom's pricing model for their new offerings, as it helps to keep the unwashed masses away from this service, and allows existing users to benefit from more of the full speed access that this service provides.

Second thought... maybe that's Telecom's idea - to get more users into thinking that anything above 50kbs is broadband and get their 400k+ userbase into paying a lot more for a mediocre service?

170768 2003-08-26 15:51:00 Oops - the 400K+ figure is just Xtra's share Greg S (201)
170769 2003-08-26 21:12:00 You do have to wonder if they secretly don't want to invest in more infrastructure so they are using prohibitive pricing to get top dollar from existing customers and stay at capacity without expansion.

170770 2003-08-26 21:32:00 Maybe we just have to hang on a little longer for WiMax (www.intel.com) wireless :| wuppo (41)
170771 2003-08-26 22:03:00 Interesting, but wireless seems to cost so much more - despite the fact that it is probably cheaper to install that wires to each house. I won't hold my breath, Dave.

170772 2003-08-26 23:11:00 I think you're wrong Greg. The reason why cable is like that is because you're all on the same network sharing a single bus. So the more people on that line the slower it can get.

The main reason that people notice slow downs is because of the Southern Cross Cable (SCC) being at the end of its limits IMO. Also there are the worms on the internet slowing it down at the moment.

Nah, the SCCN isn't anywhere near capacity at the moment

Greg S is correct there......

I think (I might be wrong) it is only using aprox only 5 % of its capacity, or somewhere around there.

170775 2003-08-27 02:27:00 The problem is "Telecom"

If telecom where not as greedy as they are at the moment then we the NZ people would have a better ADSL/DSL services!

170776 2003-08-27 03:02:00 Im using a dial up modem to connect to the internet at the moment and was thinking about getting ADSL from Telecom. I have got no idea how much data I'm up/downloading with my modem. Is there a free software that can log my internet usage? This way I will know how long 500MB will last based on my dial up usage. nw3mrgc1 (3436)
