2003-08-26 08:37:00 | this is way off topic but thought geeks and astronomers may have similar interests and would know all about it . . . well maybe . with all the emails and cuffufle going on and even our local astronomers place here, are hyped up because mars is real close this year . . . . its been in our paper and emails, and people in general are talking it seems . . . . so was just wondering has any one seen it and which is the best direction to look for me? across the island or up or down? as i understand its near the moon . . . . . problem is i cant see the moon at the moment . . . may even be possible that its cloudy out there and cant see a hell of a lot anyway, so dark to hard to see . . . LOL and so has anyone seen it? and i had come accross a good web page on it but forgot to bookmark it so that was a bit Duh! and i did a search on pf1 just in case its been done and the closest its got is march !!! LOL :D and google, well i dont have all year for that one . recomend any web sites or somethings? suitable for the kids? was thinking of taking them to our local observatory when HWMO is actually home . . . . do i need a telescope? and if its not a machine will i be able to see it? LOL with my eye so to speak or do you need some thing - telescope or very good binoculars . LOL ? not just bugs eyes then? beetle

2003-08-26 09:00:00 | Have a look to the north-east during the evening at about (at a very rough guess) an elevation of 30/40 degrees, on a clear night. It's very bright, and no prizes for guessing why it is called the red planet. It has been especially prominent during the last couple of weeks of clear skies. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the next few days is cloudy with rain/showers all over.

2003-08-26 09:07:00 | Hello beetle Below is what I have heard on the radio (NewsTalk NZ Astronomer Hour on late Friday/ Saturday mornings) > which is the best direction to look for me? I think just look E East (I think any where in the country you will see it in the east sky) > across the > island or up or down? Up :D > and so has anyone seen it? Nope, But I want to (my house is pointing east, & I have not see it yet :() but if I do see it I will try & take a photo of it & post it up on Image F1 > recomend any web sites or somethings? suitable for > the kids? I think the best NZ site for this is the Auckland Astronomical Society web page http://www . astronomy . org . nz it Should be ok for the kids ( I think school kids vist that website offen) > and i did a search on pf1 just in case its been done and the closest its > got is march !!! LOL I was just about to post a message about as well :D but You bet me to it :D :) > was thinking of taking them to our local > observatory when HWMO is actually home . . . . That is a great idea beetle :) > do i need a telescope? I think to what they have been saying to the radio, you can see it with your eyes or with some binoculars, & if you want a sort of a better view then you might get it with a telescope I will post some more information on the best times to look for mars etc latter on tonight :)

2003-08-26 09:37:00 | It rises in the east, but as time progresses through the evening it moves towards the north, and will set in the west. Tonight in Upper Hutt it is cloudy, but at about 8pm it is currently in the NE. If you can't see it with the naked eye, then your vision is non-existent :) You can see Mars nearly all the time it is a prominent planet and distinctly reddish.

2003-08-26 09:39:00 | Speaking of Mars, I haven't heard much about the "mission to Mars" lately, what's up with that? | tango (2697) | |
2003-08-26 09:49:00 | You can't miss it really, its huge. It looks kinda orangish and it'll be the biggest star in the sky (our sun excluded). Go out onto the street if your house blocks the view, or go for a short drive.
