170840 2003-08-27 00:54:00 Hiya

I am just curious. Can a ADSL modem be used with answering phone software or do we need a separate voice modem with this?

Just curious, I am not taking on ADSL. I have a voice modem. Wondering what some people have to do .. get two modem or just use the ADSL for both uses..

Cheers.

170841 2003-08-27 01:58:00 An ADSL modem has nothing to do with the telephony services on a phone line. As an analogy, it really only uses the phone line as an "aerial" to receive the ADSL signal, there is no ability for it to deal with any phone or fax calls that may be on the line.

Its technically possible to have ADSL signals carried on your incoming power line, they don't bother though as the phone line is there and its more convenient.

They require a voice modem. ADSL has no physical connection at all with the voice services.

- but they can be a bit of a hassle, less voice quality, etc.

Use a micro filter that has 2 sockets (Available from DSE) (one socket for the adsl from the router, and another for normal phone line).

Then get a modem cord, stick it into the phone line socket of the microfilter so it filters out the adsl signal. Then stick the other end of that into the 56k modem input on your pc.

You don't even need to connect the 56k modem to an ISP, it should already be accepting signals from the phone line. Then use some software for taking voice messages. I know I can listen to conversations going on - when the phone is in use. And there is definitely software out there that will record messages. I think its called SynchroConnect - that is running on our old HP Pentium.

170844 2003-08-27 12:09:00 Yes, thats the normal way of connecting a modem (or any phone equipment)to an ADSL line, via the filter. Unless its a full install, in which case there is a separate ADSL phone socket and only the ADSL modem will work in it.

It may marginally lower the connect speed, but not by much.
