| 171204 | 2003-08-28 22:43:00 | From the MS Msinfo32.exe (support.microsoft.com) tool guide: When you want to troubleshoot issues with Windows 98, Microsoft recommends you start with the Microsoft System Information tool. To reduce the time needed to start other troubleshooting or system tools, you can start the following programs from the Tools menu in Microsoft System Information: * Windows Report Tool * Update Wizard Uninstall * System File Checker * Signature Verification Tool * Registry Checker * Automatic Skip Driver Agent * Dr. Watson * System Configuration Utility * ScanDisk * Version Conflict Manager For additional information about how to use these programs, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "the title of the appropriate system tool" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the appropriate related Help topic. I would try using the system file checker tool and the registry checker first. The person with the similar problem (% THISDIRNAME %) fixed their problem by running the Internet Explorer repair tool. Can you think of anything recently that you have done to your computer which might of caused this in the first place? Sorry, I cannot give more step-by-step details on how to use Msinfo32.exe as I don't run Win98 myself. Post back if you still need help, and one of the Win98 experts may be able to give you further guidance. :) Jen |

| 171207 | 2003-08-29 11:08:00 | If SFC did not fix it then your options are getting fewer. SFC replaces any missing/corrupt DLL system files, but it seems that your damage may be a lot deeper. You cannot usually get away with "deleting files" from installed programs. There is one possibility left though. Reinstall Internet Explorer, either reinstall the version you have or a later version. PC World and other mags usually have them on magazine cover CDs, otherwise its a long download. Internet explorer re-installation will renew many Windows system files, and Windows Explorer is integrated with Internet Explorer in many ways. If that doesnt work, back up all your data you need to keep and re-install Windows, starting from scratch. |
