| 171184 | 2003-08-28 08:57:00 | Using my old computer and it's ISA modem I could connect at 5.2KB/s.On building my new computer(no ISA slot in motherboard) I bought a external Dynalink 1456VQE modem as I knew it would work with Linux.(I use Mandrake 9.1 and Suse 8.2 and sometimes WIN98).It worked fine, but I could only connect at 4.5KB/s.Reasonable for surfing, but downloads went from an average of 4.9KB/s(ISA) to less than 3KB/s,a real pain. The initialisation process was very long, especially in MDK 9.1.By closing the connection and dialling immediately afterwards I could increase the connect speed to 4.8KB/s,not much difference, but still very slow downloads. After reading Geoff Palmers article on PCWorld I plugged in a old Lucent PCI modem, set it up and I am now connecting at 5.2KB/s using Mandrake. At the moment I can not get Suse to recognise the PCI modem, and just in case Mandrake fall's over as well, the question is:is there anyway I can increase the connect speed of the external Dynalink modem.
